Xbox And PS3 Side-By-Side Size Comparison

ps3vsxbox360.pngIf someone had told you four years ago that the PS3 would be later to market and larger in size than a 360 you’d have told him to put his Microsoft-loving lips firmly onto your posterior. Now it’s your turn to kiss a little bum, as Games Radar has pictures of an Xbox 360 side-by-side with a PS3.

As you can see, the PS3 is wider, thicker and taller than its white counterpart. The sleek demo-unit we saw at E3 in 2005 is long gone, probably eaten by this giant of a machine. Check out the full gallery on Games Radar for more insight on how the PS3 has let itself go.

The worst part about it, other than everything else about it, is that with the rounded top you won’t be able to stack anything else on top of it. That’s just stupidity defined, which is lock-step with every other decision they’ve made about the P3.

CYA Sony.

I’m still onboard with the PS3. I don’t really care so much what the outside aesthetics of a game platform look like because I’m just going to enclose it a cabinet. What is important to me is the performance, feature set and software offerings. It’s like choosing a PC based on the look of the box.

I’m not certain of this but maybe the PS3’s curved topside was designed to prevent someone from putting items on top of it. Too much weight, blocked exhausts, or exposure to the heat output could cause damage. But it could also be that Sony just thought it was a cool design.

Regardless, I don’t think the size or shape of the unit is going to lessen the sales of this product. I’d bet big that PS3 is one the hottest items of the 2006 holiday shopping season.

Look, bigger is better. Why did the v 1 Xbox rule so much? Because of how freakin huge it was. Just look at all of the jokes that got made because of it.

I can’t wait for the PS3, biggest console EVAR!

The ps3 still looks like an overgrown waffle iron to me…

Microsoft might have been better off making the 360 a bit bigger–remember all those over heating issues? I wonder if that’s why there is the curved top on the PS3, stacking stuff on top is never good for cooling. That being said, it does look huge.

Actually,

The Microsoft overheating issue only affecting a very small percentage of 360s around the US. (Yes, I do own one).

And its not like Sony used the extra room for fans or liquid cooling or anything that regulates heat anyway.

I’m waiting patiently for the “PS3 is huge also expensive lol” jokes.

Also, I’d like to see photos of it side-by-side with the original X-Box. I don’t know how much smaller the 360 is, and I’m more curious about the PS3-to-HUGEBOXLOL comparison.

I’m opting for the PS3 simply based on the specs. I wish I could get a PC with the same power as a PS3 - or maybe I could get my PS3 modded to run some Windows stuff…. hmmm…

Seriously, why don’t they just make it a really slick-looking, standard sized component? I think people would appreciate it more if you could stack it with your amplifier and DVD player.

They could still make it all shiny and sexy with blue LEDs and stuff. Plus they’d probably have more room for cooling so they wouldn’t need tiny noisy fans.

But far be it for the engineers to have design influence…

Wow that’s way huge. I think they went overboard with the size.

though you see, the 360 has a “power brick” the size of that “extra width” times 4. the PS3, as with the PS2, has an internal power supply, so the power cord plugs right in.
