The camera’s default is to put the flash in auto flash mode, so that every time you partially press the shutter button (which turns on the light meter), the sensors are reading the available light and determining whether the flash should fire...see my...

I like Pentax alright, I had an old K1000 manual that has never done me wrong. These days I shoot primarily with a Canon EOS-30D, but I'm looking for something with less bulk to stick in my pocket for those drunkenly candid moments.

Leica's digital cameras are made by Panasonic - save yourself a few dollars and buy the Panny instead. When I say "made by" I actually mean that the Leicas are rebadged Panasonics, down to every detail save for the little red logo.

The new Panny LX2 comes out early next month (16:9 aspect ratio shooting, 10MP, fully manual controls, Optical Image Stabilization, with better ISO/noise than its predecessor, all in a P&S). No facial recognition features though.

Pentax makes a good camera on the SLR/DSLR side - I've been shooting them for years.

You should be fine with either, really.
