Greenpeace Scores Electronics
by Blake Robinson on August 26, 2006

Greenpeace has announced the results of its first global exam on green electronics and the score card is somewhat surprising. As you can see above, companies like Nokia and Dell are inching toward the green, while others like Apple, Motorola and Lenovo are ranked way into the red,.

The initiative was developed in order to help reduce the use of toxic chemicals and electronic wastes (e-wastes) used in electronics. Due to a high consistency of these toxic e-wastes, many retired electronics are wholly unrecyclable. As a result, once contaminated devices are discarded, they are tossed into ever expanding toxic e-wastes dumps. If the initiative is successful, it will greatly increase the recyclability of electronics worldwide and thus reduce the quantity of toxic e-wastes.

  • having set up several mac computer labs on campus, i can vouch for apple being wasteful as hell. the packaging for a G5 and its display are incredibly over the top. after setting up a single lab, you’ll be left with a mountain of styrofoam and cardboard, and several garbage bags full of cellophane wrapping.

  • I think they are looking at the overall process, not just the parts and packaging. One thing that probably really brings Apple down are the conditions of their over seas assembly operations.

  • it’s Greenpeace, not Green Peace….

  • Green Peace gotten too radical and their extreme bias keeps me from trusting them any longer. Even the founder has jumped ship. Are there any other groups that monitor this sort of thing.

  • I tend to agree with Jason. I’m all for watching the environment, but Greenpeace is way to radical for me these days. Sorry, but I don’t trust a damn thing they say.

Not surprised. Clearly Greenpeace can’t be trusted.

  • >>>Green Peace gotten too radical and their extreme bias keeps me from trusting them any longer. Even the founder has jumped ship. Are there any other groups that monitor this sort of thing.

Yes, there are. There is a group called EPEAT http://www.epeat.net/ that developed standards for green computing with a representative bunch of stakeholders. They rate computer equipment by using a ‘gold/silver/bronze’ mechanism. There are only a few items there so far, and no gold items, but the rating system is IEEE approved and well done. There is also a write up on this and specific products at ecoIron.

    Greenpeace

    Dear Sir/Madam

    With Compliments,
We, the Undersigned, are the members of State Scientific Elite Foundation, Iranian Scientific Elites Association and Iranian Inventors Association and since the projects and inventions, registered by us in Iran, have been abused many times by organizations, institutes and the like; we have no longer trust on them in Iran. We would like to follow up our registered or unregistered projects/inventions, fruits of our years of studies and researches in different areas, in the USA.

A number of our inventions our inventions are as follows:
    1. ‘Manufacture and Provide of the New Cellulosic Solid Fuel, Applicable in Missile and Missile Advanced Technologies’
2.’Design and manufacture of Electrical Energy Generating Turbines Floating On Water’.
    3. ‘Design and manufacture of Electrical Energy Generating Turbines for the Systems in which Sea Waves Energy is used’.
    4. ‘Design and manufacture of Energy Generating for Trains, Metros and Express Street Cars and Trains for Long Distances’.
    5. ‘Design and manufacture of One-Directional Axial Vanes (Blades)’.
    6. ‘Design and manufacture of Wind Electrical Energy Generating Turbines using One-Directional Axial vanes (Blades)’.
    7. ‘Design and manufacture of One-Directional Axial Vanes (Blades) Applicable in all the Industries.
    8. ‘Design and manufacture of A New Turbines with the Capability to be Installed in Jet Engines to Increase the Propulsion of Turbojet, Turboprop and Turbofan Engines)’.
    9. ‘Proving the Existence of Harmine, Harmaline and Vasicinone Alkaloids, and Identification and Separation them in Peganum Harmala Plant’.
    **************************************************************
    1. ‘Design and manufacture of One-Directional Axial-Radial Complementary Vanes (Blades)’.
    2. ‘Unclogging System for all Sorts of Clogged Pipes, Branched or Non-Branched out, Using Fluids Hydraulic Pressure’.
    3. ‘Method of Connecting Polyethylene Pipes without Coupling, Applicable in Water and Sewage Industrial Systems’.
It is to be note that we are not affiliated to any organization and/or institute of the government of I.R. Iran and all our projects and inventions are novels in the world, especially in the energy area in which hi-tech is used.
If we are given the chance ,there is no doubt that we will be able to present and challenge not only ourselves but our projects and inventions in a reputable Greenpeace in the USA and to do so all the necessary documents many be presented to any embassy of USA around Iran.

  • I wonder if any of you have heard of air recycling technology and how it could save 645,00 Tons of CO2 carbon emission and 1.5 TWh of energy a year in the UK alone if only someone will make it. You will find it explained on the pages at http://www.edginton.info/arc I would like to have some opinions on this project.
    Thanks Ben
