This has got to be the most out-of-touch back-to-school list I've ever seen. The really important stuff isn't OMG SHINY, like plasma TVs and iPods. College students really need minifridges, water filters, cheap futons, and bike locks.

[...] I myself am a college student, and I read a ridiculus list made up by Crunchgears’ John Biggs about the “Back to School Cheat Sheet” which is totally unbelievable. He lists a plasma tv of all things which costs $3500. Now tell what college student has $3500 floating around for a plasma tv? So I found a rebuttal to his list made up by a great blogger, Derek Punsalan of 5thityone. On his list you can check out a more reasonable college list of necessities, including a Macbook, things for the dorm, a mini fridge which can always come in handy for all that beer and left over pizza. And many other more reasonable items for the average college student. Filed under: Links | [...]

i think you'd have a hard time seeing anything on a 4:3 contrast ratio. if you're going to make dumb lists, at least learn the difference between "contrast ratio" and "aspect ratio". even ignoring the lexical gaffe, 4:3 aspect ratio isn't what you want - widescreen (16:9) is much better for TVs.

"It’s also a little suspicious that the only person trying to save this guy’s face submits under anonymous."

Actually, that was me. I'll give you all a hint to why it's a joke. It's not a very funny one, I admit it, and it isn't that obvious. This line gave it away:

"All your less financially well off roommates will thank you for it."

I don't visit this site regularly, but does it take money to recommend these things? In which case, he must have taken the opportunity to put all of them into one post.

[...] It’s been 24-hours since the violent backlast against CrunchGear’s laughable attempt at a back to school check list.
Ok seriously, what the fuck? Is this a 5 months late April Fool's joke? What kind of _student_ can afford all this expensive junk?
Even ignoring the complete idiocy of suggesting such expensive things for students without any revenue, the choices of the items themselves are incredibly poor.
Recommending an Alienware laptop? Give me a break, Alienware has some of the most overpriced hardware known to man (they leave Apple in the dust in that departement, that's saying something...).
Gateway NX100, $1600+, NO OPTICAL DRIVE?! And the author goes on to say that's not relevant. Fine. Oh but wait, what happens if you want to say... reinstall the OS? Or install, say, Photoshop Suite, or games, or any software that is DRM-bound to the optical media they're sold on? Well yeah, then I guess you're fucked. Too bad.

And the author didnt even consider that? This guy is a joke. And so is this article.
