Canon EOS 40D Info Leaked

Canon is allegedly upgrading the EOS series to 40D on September 26th. The new camera will potentially have a 10.1-megapixel sensor, a 2.5-inch LCD and that anti-dust feature. Not much else right now, but we can assume the 30D will go down about $100 - just like with the Rebel XT - and this one will be priced at 30D levels, about $1,300. The image, BTW, is a mock-up.

UPDATE - Canon doesn’t like us tell you not to shop. Here’s the news straight from the horses’ mouth:

Please know that this camera is not scheduled for a release anytime soon that we know of, or if it even being developed at this time. The EOS 30D is still current, and will remain so for a while. I am sorry to say that your writer may have been misinformed.
While we are no strangers to internet rumors, We ask you to please remove your posting on this camera, because it instructs consumers to not buy the EOS 30D, which we feel is not a good business practice.

All your 40D are belong to us!

Wait until the end of the month, and then buy it once the 40D rumour is shot down…

I have used an analog Canon SLR, and was planning to go for a Canon DSLR. Currently it seems that the Nikon D80 is a much better camera, and unless the D40 is released within the next month, I’m ditching Canon for Nikon

DK (Who am I?)

Am in the market for a digital SLR (my first, btw.) Was going for Canon EOS 30D an it lens (18-55) but not happy. Decided to wait for 2 months and able to afford a 30D with 17-85 IS. After 4-5 yrs, whats 2 months?? Tonight, 2 bits of news. Jessops have the Nikon D80 IN STOCK and Canon to release the 40D??

What do i do?? Canon or Nikon??

I think the new Canon 70-200 f4 with IS might sway it, but the Sept 26th better bring good news.

Or “Hello Nikon” .

Steve

@ DK

Keep in mind that the 70-200 F4 IS is expected to retail for $1250. More than double the price of the non-IS version which can be had for about $550. If I were to spend $1250 on an F4, I might as well spend the $300 more and get the F2.8. Until the price gets to be under $900, it is a big rip off.

“because it instructs consumers to not buy the EOS 30D, which we feel is not a good business practice.”

Deceiving your customers isn’t necessarily a “good business practice” either.

Did you know that Canon is introducing EOS 450D in November?
And, something completely new stuff, the world ist flat!

Don’t believe everything ;-)

Jim, I second that.

To think we just won’t go NIKON out of spite just makes me want to anyways. The cost of gas, food and everythign else needed to just survive now a days, I really don’t see why they are ‘going there’.

“Unbelievable ….. !”

… exactly.

Well what’s the news? Haven’t discovered anything concrete about the 40D apart fom a few more similar rumours. Interesting that in one rumour they were talking about Canon getting involved suggesting that the whole thing could well be true. Now the latter part of the 27th and nothing substantial? Maybe in the next few days perhaps we’ll get something.

My dilemma might be going for a bargain 30D when the 40D hits the market or whether the upgrade will infact be worth the additional cost. I’m hoping that there will be some additional surprises that Canon will include with the 40D but from a marketing point of view this would proabaly mean it being less likely for an early release with the 30D owbers becoming disaffected after such a short time. Who knows?

Think I’ll wait regardless and then make my decision.

Cheers

I’d be amazed if we hear anything from Canon before February. Based on recent release cycles I’d expect to see an update to the 5D in February. I’d be shocked if the 40D (or whatever it ends up being called) is announced anytime before September of 07. That being said, there is some truth to the observation that release cycles are shorter than they’ve ever been. I decided to pass on the XTi, and will likely buy the ‘40D’ when released. I’m actually hoping that it shows up sooner rather than later, and I’m all for a 1.6x crop factor. Of course if it was full frame and the price point was somewhere in between the 30D and the 5D I’d probably go for it.

shit… D80 is better : )

lightDC (Who am I?)

Since when is everyone assuming that a Nikon D80 is better, when it’s made of plastic (as opposed to the 30D’s magnesium alloy), doesn’t perform as well at high ISOs (see dpreview.com), slower burst rate (3 frames/sec, v. 5 for the 30D), and slower autofocus (at sporting events, notice the 98% white Canon lenses, they ditched slower AF Nikon in the 90s).

Answer in unison “it’s 10 megapixels, the 30D is 8.5″ all you want, but as any pro knows, the difference between 8.5 and 10 is negligible, especially when you consider the contrasting specs mentioned above.

Now, if you said a higher-end Nikon is competitive with the 30D, fine. But it’s absurd to suggest that a plastic, slower-moving amateur model from Nikon outguns the 30D, which is aimed higher.

lightDC-
I appreciate that you’re considering more than a small difference in megapixels when comparing the 30D to the D80. However, if you’re doing work where there is always plenty of light, I would go with the Nikon, and the extra pixels. I’ve used both, and frankly at this time, the Nikon (kit) is a better value. I use a D70 most of the time (company owned) and it’s been very good. Being a Canon fanboy/multi lens owner myself, I’m waiting for the D40, now rumoured to be announced in Feb07.

One might also note that Canon is currently running a rebate program that includes the 30D. After being extended, it ends 2/14/07. I’m hoping that might might be a clue to the arrival of the 40D.

NO 40D this time.. - once again time shows us not to believe all the “inside information”.

And Canon’s response was perfectly understandable.

To Light DC:

>> Since when is everyone assuming that a Nikon D80 is better, when it’s made of plastic (as opposed to the 30D’s magnesium alloy)

–> Nikon D80 is too made up of magnesium alloy, the cheaper D40 is also made up of that material. Canon EOS 400D is made up of cheap plastic.

>> doesn’t perform as well at high ISOs (see dpreview.com)

–> A reviewer’s opinion doesn’t reflect the actual performance of D80.

>> Now, if you said a higher-end Nikon is competitive with the 30D, fine. But it’s absurd to suggest that a plastic, slower-moving amateur model from Nikon outguns the 30D, which is aimed higher.

–> You have been seriously misinformed in your understanding of Nikon DSLRs. No Nikon DSLRs are made up of cheap plastic, and some other slow features that you can think of. There are areas where the D80 performs better than the 30D. I am kind of sad that the 40D doesn’t seem much of a improvement over the 30D.

Ppl shouldn’t be surprised if Canon “updates” their line of amateur, semi-pro or pro cameras every 18 months approx. 30D’s price will plummet (get over it, 30D owners, I’m one of you and it’s the way the market is) - same thing happened with 20D. If Canon is to honor tradition, it’s gonna be a bigger, sturdier model than the “baby” 400D - same sensor, DIGIC, lens & flash compatibilities - essentially a “prosumer” 400D with somewhat better picture quality (better color rendition/noise busting) to justify the price difference. As far as Nikon comparisons go, I regard the 30D on the same level with the D200 (I’ve shot with both, and I’ve touched-up their pix afterwards) so I think I’m entitled to suggest that the D80 is BELOW that level. Not a Canon fan per se, I chose to continue using Canon after the film 100s,10s, and 5s (A2E for the Yanks among you) I’d used over the years and realising that I like the controls and the handling of the cameras, not the inscription on the pentaprism - oh, and the fact that I love my IS 70-200 and 100-400 and I’d hate to sell them ;-) For someone starting out, though, I realise that the choise of brand can be baffling - Now, any news on an EOS-5D replacement ? :-))

I tend to agree. The 30D is a better camera than the D80. The D80 images tend to be softer. Something I find very annoying. You have to crank up the D80 sharpness to match the 30D default setting but in doing so it eventually hurts the image.

And the D80 sells its RAW image software separately. The 30D comes with the software. And you can’t hook up the D80 directly to your PC and have full control, like you can with the 30D. You might be able to buy some optional package for the D80 but I’m not sure about that.

The 30D also has better (more useful) image features. More settings for color, contrast, sharpness and saturation than the D80 has. The D80 does have more features over all but those extra features aren’t all that useful in my opinion. The only real advantage the D80 has is the ability to do post-processing in camera. Something I would never do on the camera.

And lastly the 30D takes better photo’s in the high ISO range. Sorry if this hurts the feeling of any D80 owner. The D80 is still a descent camera.

Ich finde Ihre Homepage sehr gut und fundiert. Die Informationen helfen mir bei einer Diplomarbeit für den Bereich der Medizinischen Dokumentation vielen Dank und weiter so.

The BIG question
eos30d vs 40d
I can find an eos 30d new for around 700.00
And an eos 40d new for around 1000.00
They are both great cameras but do you people really think that the 40d is $300.00 better?
A little bigger display 100.00
An extra 1.5 fps 100.00
And all the whatevers 100.00

Just think about it. If you took 1000 shots with a 30d and 1000 shots with the 40d would the quality be so much better that you would be willing to pay 50% more for that camera. I dont think so.
With that said of course I would take a 40d over a 30d but I can wait until the BIG hype is over and the 50d comes out and pick up the 40d then.
