Yahoo! Go for TV Ups the Ante
by John Biggs on September 8, 2006

Yahoo! Go for TV is a downloadable video recording software that works with your TV tuner card and creates a Media Center-alike experience on almost any PC. It came out a few months ago, but now they’ve added Flickr integration, picture-in-picture functionality, movie recommendations, and local network music streaming.

The service is obviously free and probably one of the few ideas in this whole Web 2.0/post-content/advertorial world. Essentially, this gives Yahoo! a captive audience - unfortunately only folks with TV tuners really need apply because the rest of the functionality is a bit underwhelming - and puts Microsoft in the awkward position of having to make a good Media Center product.

  • I have been looking for this type of functionality for years. The Media Center was a great idea, but the required overhead in software and hardware made it difficult to justify.

Yahoo has been doing such a good job at supplying content, it’s great that they are finally crossing over to the broadcast media area.
