Chinese Car That Drives Itself
by Gavin Robinson on September 11, 2006

FAW, an automaker in China, has begun showing off its new top-of-the-line model. It’s big, sexy, expensive, and–wait, what’s that? No driver is required?!

According to the manufacturer, the vehicle can stay in control while driving at speeds of up to 93 MPH. The system involves two cameras that are connected to a computer which interpolates things like curbs and center lines in an effort to make turnoffs, stop at street crossings, and stay in your lane. No word on how it does with not hitting people that pull out in front of you.

  • Does it have a feature to keep the left blinker on all the time? ‘Cause if it doesn’t, why even bother?

    lol…damn it that was funny!

  • The Chinese have a long, long way to go with their automaking efforts. The concept cars shown at the last North American AutoShow were completely berated for their lack of safety, quality, comfort, design and innovation by both critics and consumers alike.

I’m sure that they’ll introduce models into the already crowded marketplace in the next few years but their probably at least a decade or two away from capturing the average consumer’s interest. It took Toyota over 20 years and look at the disasters Daewoo, Daihatsu, and the Yugo auto lines.

  • Are you saying my Yugo is a disaster, webonics? But I paid almost twenty goats for it, and it still runs well when you push it!

  • Flying cars????

  • Well i am in China now i can see a lot of improvements in auto industry here

  • This is just a little bit creepy.
What happens if a little kid runs across; beneath the camera?
    Aren’t humans getting lazy nowadays!

    Nonetheless, I want one.
Im not a very confident L plater.
