Xbox 360 Will Have an Internal HD DVD Drive in 2007

DigiTimes of Taiwan claims that the Xbox 360 models premiering the first half of 2007 will have internal HD DVD drives. This goes in the face of Microsoft policy, which has been to say the external HD DVD drive is the only option in the near future for HD DVD playback on the Xbox 360.
DigiTimes claims that they’ve talked to Taiwan’s optical disc drive industry and found that these companies have been contracted to make internal HD DVD drives for the Xbox 360. This internal drive would also create ill will from early adopters, who expected the HD DVD drive to be only external so everyone was on the same playing field, instead of getting shafted by having a gimpy unit with a last-gen DVD drive inside.
But what if HD DVD isn’t the winner? Will including the HD DVD drive internally be throwing Microsoft’s weight into a possibly losing camp? Wasn’t that partially the reason for not including the drive in the first place?

“But what if HD DVD isn’t the winner?”
Thats a good point but when will we know who will be the winner? If they adapt it to their system i think their going to have an edge. The 360 is a very popular device and can be on of those reasons why the two competitors either wins or loses.

Just one more nail in the PS3 coffin.

Right but remember the the PS3 will come with a blueray drive and it will have wiresless and bluetooth built in. And for 599 you get all that hmmm.. Their still in competition if you ask me. I personally own an Xbox and I’d hate to have a big bulky HD by my box.

I’m thinking they’re doing this to make HD-DVD the winner, I only wonder if this means that some games will be published on HD-DVD…
Chance also is, that they are planning it for the next generation of Xbox’s…

Now I dont know whether to buy one right away or to wait. Anyway I didnt really think Blu Ray had a chance especially when microsoft announced the HD-DVD drive for the 360.

I’m still siding with Blu-Ray. It still seems to have much more support from the electronics industry and the studios. Despite the naysaying, PS3 will still be a huge launch and the integrated Blu-Ray will truly further its penetration into the marketplace.

who cares what it will ship with internally, with a mod chip you can make it do almost anything!
