Electrodynamic Bike Light Cuts Down On Batteries

Hey, look, it’s another product that somebody should have thought of years ago but hasn’t. The Electrodynamic Bike Light is a new set of lights that are charged through electromagnetic induction. So when you’re riding, they’re shining. It’s smart as well as environment-consious. I’m trying desperately to get my bike from Baton Rouge to Chicago, and if I’m successful, I’ll probably buy a set of these things immediately. Only about $45 for the pair, so somebody drive up to Chicago soon and drop my bike off for me, kthanks.

This is nothing new. I had a bike over 30 years ago that had a light that was powered off of the spinning wheel. This light may be brighter and more efficient, but not really noteworthy.

USSR (Who am I?)

This is not an invention, we used to have it back in 1980th when i lived in USSR. Every bike that was produced came with this kind Electrodynamic Bike Light . The problem was that we were isolated from the rest of the world, thats why nobody knows about it.

Re: Foo, USSR

Neither of you specified a specific model or unit that I could use to compare, but I can’t help but assume that this “Electrodynamic Bike Light” is leaps and bounds ahead of what you used 30 years ago. Although Foo’s light may have been powered off the spinning wheel, the particular design that is being discussed doesn’t require friction for power, so it creates less drag and is less harsh on the tires.

Besides that, the fact that older versions of this concept used regular light bulbs and the Electrodynamic Bike Light uses LEDs, make it far more efficient than what you probably used back in the day.

The bike I ride now, which I purchased almost 4 years ago has the same kind of light, this is hardly new…

Johnal, I see you actually read the article. I think you may be one of the only ones.

This light is very cool, but you are still losing energy to generate light, and I prefer battery powered LED lights - they can last as long as 32 hours, and aren’t dependent on you moving all the time.
