Wii Gets Date, Price

Well we were off by about a week–the Nintendo Wii will be released on Sunday, November 19. It will cost $250 and is going to ship with Wii Sports, which includes golf, bowling, baseball and tennis.

The Wii is sort of bittersweet to me. I’m completely anxious to play games like Battalion Wars 2 with that wonderfully creative controller, but the lack of HD support really pisses me off. I know Nintendo’s goal is to make this a console that general consumers will appreciate, but even though most people don’t have HD yet, they probably will soon. It’s this lack of forward-thinking that has me questioning this system. I’m probably overreacting though.

I thought the same thing at first, but if you think about it, it’s not too weird. With all the advertisements going out in the Sunday paper, Sunday is a big sales day. Nintendo can have it in the Sunday paper with a publicized launch day and have it available immediately. It’s not a a bad idea, really.

This should be quite sweet. I really don’t think HDTV is an issue since Nintendo doesn’t generally cater to the ultra-high rez. gaming crowd. People aren’t looking to play Oblivion, Knights of the Old Republic, or ultra realistic sports on the Wii, they want to play cartoony Golf, Ping Pong, Zelda, and Mario Cart ver. 16.

Nintendo has always catered towards the more “fun” games while the MS and Sony go for the RPG, sports, and shooters.

Fun comes from gameplay, not high definition.

I think you are. I want the Wii because I know it’s going to be loads of fun. If I wanted awesome graphics, I would not buy a console. I’d play games on my PC.

And the Wii is cheap, which is precisely *because* it’s not the latest and greatest hardware. You need some serious graphics power to display HD graphics. In fact, even the PS3 won’t be able to use the full HD resolution for most games. PGR on the Xbox doesn’t use the full HD resolution. And it looks great.

Finally, I got a beamer, and I guess I’m not the only one here. My beamer displays 800×600 pixels. I can’t see the individual pixels while sitting on my sofa unless I look really hard.

I would care if it cost more. But it doesn’t. And if I can choose between cost and HD, I’m squarely on the side of cost.
