Haven’t tons of studies found that it’s the distraction of talking on a cell that causes accidents, and not the dialing or holding the phone to your head?
This is just another piece of worthless legistlation, though one that’s becoming very widespread.
Unless they outlaw phone calls while driving entirely, I don’t think this will have any effect. And, if they were to do that, then they might as well outlaw talking in the car period. Just you and your passengers, staring straight ahead.
Every driver should be responsible for keeping themselves focused on driving, and preventing themselves from getting too distracted. We don’t need legislation for this.

Actually, talking to people in your car is a lot less dangerous than talking on the phone. When you talk to people in your car, you’re still mentally in the car, and they can see what’s going on, warn you if something is coming up, etc. When you’re on the phone, you are mentally in this conversation with someone who is in an entirely different setting from you, and has no idea what is going on in your environment, and as such cannot warn you. I certainly agree that drivers shouldn’t carry on long involved conversations with people in their cars.
Having both hands on the wheel helps. Sure, it’s nowhere near as good as making talking on phones illegal, but it’s a step in the right direction.
We don’t need legislations for keepign drivers responsible for their driving? Why don’t we make driving drunk legal then, after all, people will be responsible for knowing they shouldn’t!

Where I live, using a cell phone without a car kit or a headset while driving is already illegal. It’s probably a good thing - at least that way you have both hands on the steering wheel. But Bassam is right that taking phone calls while driving is *always* dangerous. It’s less dangerous when you’re using a headset, but it’s still dangerous.

For those of you that don’t want to throw in the money to get a bluetooth phone
your quick and reliable solution is wrapping an elastic band around your head

Driving is one activity that does really need lots of concentration. In fact, correct my last claim. Driving is one activity that does really need your complete concentration. Even for just a split second of not concentrating on your main activity, which is driving, something really untoward could happen to you and to your passengers. And that is something that you would not want to happen to you.
This could be the very reason behind the bill that California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger just signed. According to this new law, drivers who would need to use their cellular phones while they are driving could only be able to do so if they have a headset on or a speakerphone for that matter. What is important is that the driver who is on the cell phone should have a hands-free device so that the hands could completely be working the wheel.
It is going to cost you $20 for the first time that you are caught for this offense. But after that, that would cost you $50. Better be ready with ready with your headsets then or it is going to be $20 and $50 for that. You have up until the end of next year to purchase your chosen headset. You can also add some Plantronics Ear Cushions Part No. 38064-25 for £25.99 for added comfort. You should be all set come the 1st of January 2008 for this new law would be in its full effect.
