MicroOptical myvu Made for iPod edition

MicroOptical announced today a personal media viewer (aka video glasses) developed for use with the iPod video. The glasses simulate a 27-inch screen viewed from six feet away. Unlike similar devices, users can see slightly above and below the screen so that they can remain somewhat aware of their surroundings. It utilizes an ultra-slim rechargeable lithium battery that can provide six hours of playback, includes noice-reducing earbuds, has controls on the cord and comes with a travel case with room for the iPod. The myvu system will be available late this fall for $399.

Has anyone tried anything like this? It seems to me like it’d sear your eyeballs right out your head. I remember using the Virtual Boy back in the day and it’d give me piercing headaches. I assume this would have roughly the same effect.

The Virtual Boy gave you headaches because it showed you a stereo picture, and because of the shrill red light which Nintendo used for the displays. This has neither stereo images nor crass red lasers pointing right at your eyes.

It looks cool and all…but do you really wanna be seen in public with your cyclops-esque video player?

Cool concept but you’d have dork written all over you if you went out in public looking like Max Headroom with these glasses.

I take issue with it even being a cool concept. Never would wear it in public, and if I ever tried it on in private I would never admit it. For $399?? What were they thinking??

What modern gadget-freak would be satisfied with a 27-inch TV from 6 feet?

Give me a pair of TV glasses that simulates a 42-inch plasma from 6 inches, and I’ll spend a thousand dollars on it!

I purchased a pair of the myvu glasses and I wear them every where - mostly when I travel. You do not look like a dork, in fact people are intrigued and want to know what it is. As soon as they put the glasses on, they are hooked and want to get a pair. The image itself is quite nice for a 320×240 (i wouldn’t change a thing) - They do not cause headaches and you do not loose sight of what is going on around you. I’ve even gotten so into a movie that I have washed dishes and have completed other chores around the house while wearing the myvu

So we can all walk around looking like Jordy watching shrunken, fuzzy, 640×480 iTunes movies? My eyes and heard hurt just thinking about it. It kinda reminds me of that gizmo Steve Martin’s character invented in the movie The Jerk - all the dumbasses in the movie all had to have one then they all went cross-eyed and sued him. Same thing will happen here?
