In a world where bigger is better (see: six-bladed safety razors for hewing off facial appendages and Hummer H2s for taking kids to school), those 17″ laptop screens have become a tad stale. Not be ones to sit around doing nothing (too busy dodging exploding laptops - Blake) went out and put together the XPS M2010. This monstrosity features a 20″ screen, and can be called a portable desktop, or a desktop/laptop hybrid. At 18.5 pounds, it’s not really intended for the roadwarrior. But what if it were?
The good people at Laptop Magazine took their demo model for a stroll about town, and made record of the reactions from the common man. They ranged from incredulous to disgusted, but the machine made a splash (edit: fortunately not an explosion) wherever it went.
The system tested came packed with Windows XP Home Media Center, a 2.16-GHz Core Duo from Intel, 2GB RAM, WiFi and a Mobility Radeon X1800 with 256RAM. It’s also got a wireless remote and DVR-functionality.
It’s for sure more computer than most portables need, but there probably is a niche market for this thing. What it is, we don’t know, but we’d love to get our hands on one.

Montrosity is right… that sucker is huge!
I mean, do you really need to be doing video editing while on the subway?
And how long does the battery last, 5 minutes?
I think this laptop would be firmly anchored to a desk, and would be mobile in name only.

Wow! I saw this model on the dell.com site a couple of weeks ago but there was nothing to show the dimensions or weight. Is that an accurate photo to scale? If so that is just not functional or practical. At 18.5lbs, this laptop would be a real burden to carry from one end of an airport to another terminal to catch a flight. I like the design and its very unique but seems to miss out on the functionality. Of course, the XPS line are designed for gamers and gamers typically travel to conventions and contests. So the size and power may be necessary for a gamer and the portability is only a secondary necessity. The price tag is over $3500.

That’s an awesome photo.
My favorite part of that machine is the Build-Your-Own option to upgrade to 4gig of RAM. For $3500.
