We’ve recently learned that copyright restrictions on HD DVD don’t allow 1080p over component cables. AACS over HD DVD format doesn’t allow them to use the component cables for better output than 1080i. [...]

I agree. If you add upscalling from standard DVD to HD and then play it on a HDTV - you are going to see a LOT of extra noise where the system is guessing at the new data - just the same as if you try to SCALE up a JPG in photoshop - ick!

I agree with Steve. Upscaling players seem to do more harm than good, most of the time. Especially when they are not working at the TV's native resolution.

"upscaling your current DVD movies to 1080p as well, which will be a welcome addition for most households with HDTVs but no upscaling DVD Player"

Uh, "upscaling" is of extremely limited benefit. No technology can add information where it does not exist. A standard DVD cannot be turned into an HD-DVD through this sort of manipulation.

I have an "upscaling" DVD player, and it makes no discernable difference whatsoever versus a regular high-quality DVD player.
