  • I’ve had one of these for several months. When accessed through the samba service it regularly and repeatedly “loses” huge numbers of folders and files. The data is still there, but the contents of the directories appear to be being reported incorredtly. I get the same problem when using either explorer to read the disc or using an application’s own File|Open dialogue box. BUT, if I go into the box through FTP, there’s all my data sitting perfectly happily. Something very naughty going on.

Just a thought – there’s a firmware update for this box on the web at
    http://www.maplin.co.uk/Media/PDFs/FirmwareBasicNAS.bin

….just in case that solves your woes.

I’ve been looking at this; FTP & samba access would be good for me. Have you tried the firmware update?

Also, what is the access speed like? I’ve looked at the Thermaltake one, but the review only gives it 3.8MB/sec over the ethernet connection, which is WAY too slow for me :(

  • Just bought one of these – setup took about 30 minutes, included flashing with the latest firmware, from ‘Maplin’.

Great piece of kit for the money – does just what it says on the box!

  • I just got one of these, now I need to get a hard drive, I see that it is IDE, but(forgive my ignorance) would an SATA 2 drive work in this? Not much info in the manual about hard drives. Thanks!

  • I bought one of these last week. The first one I had would only work through USB. The replacement works across my network (almost). I had to change the IP to the more common 192.168.1.x address range. I disable DHCP and assign individual IPs to all my stuff, it usually saves time booting up. I can access the setup page across the LAN, and I have LAN FTP access, but am unable to (SMB)Drive Map the device across the LAN. XP refuses to find it, and will not accept an IP number address. Im sure I’ll find a way. Other than that It is a clean looking piece of kit that feels like quality.

  • Bloke – No, the drive you put into it CANNOT be sata, it must be a PATA drive, also called IDE ATA100 etc. So, from the links you have put up, it would be your last, and you can see on the item details it lists ATA133 IDE.

As for problems with it, none so far for me. But the guy in the shop would not give me it until I acknowledged that I HAD to perform the firmware upgrade on it. He knew from personal experience that it is fine after that, but useless before it.
I’ll give SMB a try now and see if the XBOX will talk to it, which it should!!

  • Well, I have now got this fully set-up, both with 2 XP home computers and an XBOX, which can happily stream from it.
Well worth the cash I would say, and to hard to configure at all.

  • Greetings

I’ve had one of these a couple of days and got it running in the wireless network without problems, but it doesn’t seem to want to play over USB11:

I expected it to appear in the drive list of “My Computer” as soon as I plugged it in…. Or am I being naive? I’m probably not doing something quite obvious {:~(

  • If you’re having trouble re: getting it to work on the LAN, you’ve gotta make sure it’s on the same workgroup name AND local IP range e.g. 192.168.0.1 is on a different range to 192.168.1.1.

Best to fix all local computers to an IP as well as the LANdisk box.

  • Hiya
Got one from Maplin recently and same problem as Palantir, it won’t play over USB. Can’t find the driver anywhere.
When flashing ROM over IP remember to change the IP in loader and firmware batch files to the IP you’ve assigned.

  • I’ve just purchased one of these and it has arrived today minus any instructions!!!

I have a mac OSX and a wireless router.. i’d like to plug this into the router and access via my mac. I was told the SMB was a good thing to have for the mac.

But what’s the IP for this right out of the box? i will upgrade the firmware on a friends pc before connecting but anything i need to know BEFORE plugging in??

    thanks.
    David.

  • Very happy with mine, but missing any documentation out of the box.
If you are plugging this in and have no documentation plug it directly into the PC via an ethernet and use your webbrowser to go to http:\\storage
    That should get you started.
Fine kit. I’ve left the DHCP running and not had any problem when it gets connected via the router or direct.
I’m using samba rather than FTP.

  • I have just set up one of these on my network but I cannot see it in my network places. I have a Netgear router that can see the netdisk, I can log into the netdisk fine and all seems ok. However the shared directories do not appear in My Nework Places. The netdisk has an IP address allocated by the router. I do not have any workgroups setup as such but the netdisk is still set to WORKGROUP. I’m a bit of a newbie to networks but I need to get this running-any ideas?

  • Hello, also very happy with mine with USB, but missing any documentation out of the box. Nowadays I want the drive to setup to ethernet and I got a surprise! My Browsers (Firefox and MSIE) want to have name and password for the drive. I don’t know any, because theres no documentation.
Has anybody an idea for this problem?

  • Hi Harald
The password is admin, name is admin. Then you need to http://storage, assuming either this is acting as DHCP, or you have another dhcp turned on. If you go to my site there are a couple of really good links to help with this setup

  • How o how can I get this working on my xbox? It’ll work on my PC either through USB or LAN. My PC networks with my xbox fine. I can even access it on my xbox through my PC (when its connected by USB) Just can’t cut out the PC and access it directly through my xbox (which is why I bought it).

Any ideas Gertrude? You must have a hub.

  • Hi, I came across this page by chance. I have one of these running ok since about one week. It is connected to my Netgear router, and I am using it as a SMB server. The problem is I cannot put a folder password. I go to “SMB server page”, and on the right pane, I highlight the folder I want to put a password to. Then, I click on “Password” button, and set a password. But, when I access the folder from a PC over the lan, there is no password prompt, and I can access the folder without the password. Is there something I am missing.
Also, my Mobile Disk does not remember the time setting. When I leave it “off” sometime, the time is wrong when I turn it on. This morning, it does not even remember the login password I had set. It is back to the default password.

My firmware version is NAS-BASIC45, LOADER 67. Maybe I can try another version? Can someone give me advice?

  • Palantir and Peter – I had the same trouble in failing to get the NAS drive to work via USB. I got the PC to recognise it by setting the HD jumper to MASTER, not CABLE SELECT as I initially had it (thanks to a tip on another website!).

Works like a dream now. Not tremendously fast on the LAN, but fast enough to play music over my Homeplug network, which along with data storage was all I wanted.

    Bargain!

  • Had one of these for a few months now, working great til i had a power cut whilst copying to it(maybe nothing to do with it but since then i cant talk to it) and i can no longer access it through usb or network, been told to try and use a crossed over patch cable and hold down the reset button when i turn it on, nothing is working so i am guessing a trip to maplin to trade it in for a working one unless nyone can lead me to a way?

    Regards

  • I’ve just got one of these but no luck so far. I’ve connected it to my netgear router and it has allocated an I/P ok so it’s on the same as my pc (192.168.0.x). I’ve changed the workgroup to the same as my pc. I can use all the web stuff using my browser fine. However, when I try to map the drive it keeps asking me for a user id and password even though the \\storage\public smb directory has no password. Help please !!!

  • Been using one of these for a couple of weeks now with an old 40Gb drive installed and by and large it works well with 15 users connected, initially just sharing a couple of Gigabytes of non-critical files.

The only problem I am having is the drive periodically locks up and will not respond at all even when I try to log in using http:\storage in the normal way. It’s as though it’s simply not there at all.

When this happens I simply power off at the switch, count slowly to three and then switch back on. After five or so seconds it’s fine again.

Once it’s reliable I want to move a 30Mb Access database over to it but I daren’t do this until this problem is resolved as everyone uses the database all day every day.

    Any suggestions?

  • I am sorry but I have just baught this drive and I can say it is a complete load of cr@p !!!! I have connected it to my 1gb switch (netgear) and my 100mb router (linksys). The best transfer rate I can get out of this rubbish is 600kb a sec !! This is with the firmwareV48LD69 and the old 45. What do these jokers think they are trying to pull here !!!

    regards peter

  • peter, you seem like a retard. maybe leave it to someone who has a clue??

    • Think of your own limitations!!!!, just because someone who doesn’t know something that you do, doesn’t give you the right to slag him/her off.

Sick people like you, that need to feed off of other people’s lack of knowledge need to look in the mirror every day and say I’m an idiot!

      Best regards

  • Someone commented on lots of files not appearing over the LAN even though they are there really, eg, via FTP.

This is a common occurrence on Windows networks and happens when you share folders too. Sometimes you see files and sometimes not. It has been there as long as I can remember and still is not fixed. I have seen it for at least 10 years.

Of course, this makes use of tools like SyncToy a bit dicey as you are never sure whether a file that is invisible remotely will cause a local one to vanish too. Thus your carefully worked out backup policy disappears in a puff of smoke.

For a safe backup I would recommend using the drive in its USB mode. But mine refuses to behave as a USB drive any more. :-(

  • Hi,

Had one of these for about a year now and its gr8! The only problem being, I have lent it to a friend for the past four months and i am getting it back but before I start making data arrnagements, did it not say somewhere in the manual you can only get so much space in each folder?

Also do you know where I can find an online manual for it – i have lost mine!

  • Hi I have just bought this – configured using the web manager and fixed my IP – being a UNIX chap, my knowledge of WIndows XP is limited – I have created a public folder in SMB but cannot find anyway of seeing this as a drive, anybody able to provide some support?
