Playstation 3 Drops Price, Adds HDMI

Finally, some good news from Sony. In Tokyo, Japan, Ken Kutaragi revealed that the lower-end Playstation 3 model will have HDMI support. At least now people will consider buying the cheaper version of the Playstation 3. Kutaragi actually stated that the addition of the HDMI was done because of the bad press Sony was getting!

At the time of E3 there was no [consensus on] HDMI, and that Sony was “concerned that it was overkill.” But negative reception from the press and manufacturers has caused the company to reconsider.

I have no idea how letting the cheaper Playstation 3 have HDMI would be “overkill”, but Sony has been pretty odd these days. Kutaragi also revealed some more good news: The Playstation 3 will have a price drop. Excited? Now, here’s the bad news: The price drop will only be in Japan. Why don’t we get it? Because retailers in the U.S. said that the price tag of the PS3 was a great deal. The price drop isn’t much, from $499 to $429, but it’s a start. Maybe next week, Sony will tell us that they finally figured out how to do motion-detection and vibration, cross your fingers.

“motion-detection and vibration, cross your fingers”

Oh god I hope so, I was so disappointed when Sony said no more support for vibration. It would be cool if they gave us options, even one that allows us to buy the boomerang controllers. I know I know, no one likes it but I actually thought it was cool.

I thought the price drop was fairly significant, since the original pricing was 62,790Yen, which is about $541.00. The new pricing is 49,980Yen, which is about $430.00. so more than $110.00 mark down.

The bad news is, PS3 software seems to be pricey like hell. It is suspected to sell around $85.00 to $95.00 per piece.

It’s strange that they have only optioned to cut the price of the low-end model in Japan. It seems to me that Sony need to be more concerned with the American and European markets where they face much stiffer competition from Microsoft, as well as the fact that Europe and America are far bigger markets in terms of DVD sales and potentially blu-ray, should they managed to see off HD DVD in the battle for next generation home movie sales. However, it maybe the case that Sony believes, as is likely, that they will have less trouble selling the PS3 at full price in the States to the early adopters initially, and are maybe trying to avoid having to lower the price until absolutely necessary, whereas in Japan, Sony faces extremely stiff competition at launch from Nintendo’s quirky little wii console and it’s bargain price.

One big big plus is that Sony have announced that the lower-end PS3 wil in fact now come with full HDMI support, so you could potentially get a PS3 with blu-ray player, full HDMI support, 20gig HDD, all it’s other bells and whistles for around $100 LESS than the planned price of Microsoft’s equivalent Xbox 360 and external HD-DVD drive….

The addition of HDMI support in the low-end model, coupled with the price drop, if only in Japan for the present, at leasts indicates that maybe Sony are finally starting to listen to what the public are saying and doing something about it…. Let’s hope they keep it up

I bet that a price drop for the PS3 will arrive even sooner in america and europe though, now that it is cheaper in Japan. I think Sony still have a fighting chance though in this console war, everyone has slagged it off, but really it seems like a solid decent system.

Do we need to create “bad press” to get Sony to drop the price in the US and Europe too?

I would like Sony to find an alternative way to add vibration back to the controllers. I will miss that feature.

I’m still pulling for the PS3, even though it seems to be the underdog in the next-gen platforms.

sony is going to lose to microsoft’s 360 console because they think most of the usa citizens are rich. most of us are middle class and can barely buy a hdtv. its just a game console sony not a computer, if you can surf the net in it then that would be a fair price. other then that, is just a game console.

It’s all about the nintendo wii. That consol is a pure beauty. Am in love with it plus the cheap price bang bang. Who is foolish enough to buy a consol for $400?

Boomride,

most Xbox360’s sold at launch went for 1000+ on ebay, where a lot (if not most) of the owners right now got their console. I understand what you’re saying about price and whatnot, but i’m nowhere near a middle class, and I don’t even think the PS3 is that expensive as i’ll be getting one asap. It takes like 2 paychecks working a 9 - 5 job to afford the 60gb PS3. I know that people have other things to think about, but if that was the case, they wouldn’t have spent $400+ on the Xbox360. Now would they? It seems like the people criticising the PS3 because of it’s price are the ones who bought a $400+ machine. So what gives? How is $400 that much different than paying $500 for the 20gb PS3?

It also comes with a browser if you needed to know.

Dash,

Who’s foolish enough to buy a console for $400? They’re probably as foolish as people who perfer to buy a new console that isn’t much stronger than the original Xbox360, just because it comes with a wand. I am not trying to diss Nintendo, or the Wii because I will own one before the end of 2007. But i’m sure people want to see pretty graphics with great games. The Wii won’t change gameplay just because you’re now moving your hand to slash your enemies. Will the Wii prove to be successful? We’ll have to wait and find out.

It’s “overkill” because they don’t understand what is actually of interest to consumers. Sony has become a joke of old school consumer marketing thinking.

And it’s not “good news” that they dropped the price. This was a ridiculous and completely expected marketing tactic that was as foolish as it was short-sighted. All it did was create a flurry of press about how expensive the damn thing would be.

Again, Sony has no clue how to be real with their consumers, and they’re suffering because of it.

They thought it was “overkill” because not many people have HDMI inputs. Duh.

First y’all haters say that “It’s ONLY a gaming platform, I’m not paying $600″ (stubbornly quoting the high-end price which is higher only because of the extras beyond gaming), then when they leave something (HDMI) out of the more stripped down gaming model, which most people can’t even use yet, the haters cry that they don’t understand that consumers want it all.

Bottom line: they’re having difficulty with so many new technologies. The technologies are superior to those in the 360. Yeah, you’ll pay more for them. Over the life of a console, not much more.

Sony is not more sneaky or foolish than M$. They are better at hardware, and they had better get off their asses and make sure their software (online) for PS3 holds up to XBox Live. Their movie arm is the best at marketing of all the movie studios. People talk about the “Sony hype machine”, which is mostly just them being silent and letting rumors fly, and I wonder if it’s the same people saying “$ony hyp3 machin3″ who months later are saying how Sony can’t relate, can’t market. Bash them when they’re on top, kick them when they’re down. Sounds good…
