  I read a rumour that Gran Tourismo could come out with 2 versions, one normal buy and play the other an all singing all dancing version that could be even more expensive than the top range quoted above. Add to that the cost of being able to add cars and tracks online and it gets really pricey.

  The PS3 is going to have to be amazing if it’s to carry on the dominance the PS2 had at these prices.

  Those game prices were originally in yen, for the Japanese market. You can’t simply convert yen to dollars and expect that to hold for the US market. Games are priced differently here; usually lower.

  Activision has said that its PS3 games will be $59.99. EA has not mentioned any difference in price for their PS3 and 360 titles. First party, non-AAA games might be lower than $59.99.

  Since Sony is one of the creators of the Cell, prices for it will drop more in time than, say, the price of the 360 CPUs will. IBM sells the 360s’ CPUs to Microsoft and wants to make a profit. But Sony is one of the 3 developers of Cell. The part of the cost of a Cell chip that would normally be Sony’s cut of the profit can be dropped out to lower PS3 costs, if they want to. That’s in addition to the inevitable drops in cost as this new technology is produced more easily.

  Regardless of game pricing, I will continue to use an online video game rental service, GameFly. For those not in the know, GameFly is the equivalent of NetFlix for video games. I have been a member for about 18 months. The service and pricing is excellent. Best of all, I don’t fork out a bunch of money for a game that I can beat in 3 days. I highly recommend the service, otherwise make sure you do your game research.
