GTA Blamed In Another Court Case

It seems as though we’re never going to get passed that whole “blaming actions on violent media outlet” phase. Just how many times can Marilyn Manson and Doom be blamed for things going extremely wrong?

Back in 2004, Cody Posey was convicted of killing his father, stepmother and stepsister after years of mental and physical abuse. So what went on at Cody Posey’s trial today? Check it out:

Lawyers today said Posey would not have committed the murders if he hadn’t played the “murder-simulation device” Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Circling the courthouse is Miami attorney and anti-game crusader Jack Thompson, who has descended upon New Mexico and is aiding the lawyers in the suit.

Not only has the finger been pointed at Rockstar Games, but the lawyers have stated that Sony Computer Entertainment and Take-Two Interactive are also at fault. Sounds like video games are going to take another hit, and lawyers are going to get to walk away with their pockets full.

I dunno…do you think the “years of mental and physical abuse” may have had something to do with the boy’s actions?!?! This frivolous pursuit is nothing more than an attempt at censorship and get-rich-quick schemes by shady lawyers (and Joe Lieberman and Kitty Gore).

I agree there needs to be a barrier to violent and adult-based content from young kids…it’s called a “parent”. The ESRB rating has been around long enough that parents should monitor the games that their children buy or rent. But regardless of the nature of the games, if the games caused violent tendencies in adolescents, shouldn’t we see widespread violence and murders across the country in consideration of the huge sales success of the GTA series.

Oh, puuleeze. I call bullsh*t.

No. You’re confusing “statistically significant correlation” with “strong correlation.”

It’s highly likely that violent games have a negative influence on the people who play them (although in this particular case, compared to everything else this person went through, it most certainly played no role at all). Does that mean that they should be banned? Hell no. IMHO, they shouldn’t be sold to minors, but adults should be allowed to play whatever the hell they want.

Man, wouldn’t it be great if in the next GTA there was a mission to “take out” a lawyer who was trying to get a violent video game pulled from the shelves. I smell a perfect use of the sniper rifle.

interesting… I side with the video games makers and agree that parents should do their jobs, not abuse the kids and filter what they consume, media and food. That said I wonder if the next GTA game had a series of good deeds in it then would that credit be given to the game?

Probably. Look at how the media treats “positive” games like Nintendo’s Brain Training.
