According to Taiwanese tech news site Digitimes, Microsoft will cut prices of their Xbox 360 consoles quite soon. They’ve negotiated price reductions with various equipment manufacturers in Taiwan, and can probably lower prices by 15-20% just thanks to the fact that parts have gotten cheaper.
Microsoft may want to lower prices by Christmas in order to provide a nice incentive for the fairly expensive PlayStation 3. Also, they could be thinking of bundling the external HD DVD drive with the console at $399, but that probably wouldn’t make sense since the drive is rumored to cost around $199 by itself.

It would actually make a LOT of sense for them to include the external drive at $399, especially since Sony might try to duplicate the $100 price drop on their 20GB system in the US at the last minute (which is EXACTLY what I think they’re planning if not right away at the very latest after the initial batch goes out).
Rant: Personally I’d prefer an internal HD-DVD drive - I’d even pay $199 and ship my 360 in to MS to have it swapped out - but since that doesn’t seem to be an option I’ll be getting the external drive :P

Hi,
MS will most likely incorporate a HD DVD drive once the price drops low enough. My guess is we will see it for November 2007. The technology may offer a HD drive that has twice the storage that the current HD has.
