No Components For 1080p

Last week, we posted about how the Xbox 360 will support 1080p, upscale DVDs and upscale your games. We’ve recently learned that copyright restrictions on HD DVD don’t allow 1080p over component cables. AACS over HD DVD format doesn’t allow them to use the component cables for better output than 1080i.

VGA is classified as “authorized computer monitor output”. If you’re on the market for a new HDTV for your Xbox 360, it might be better to wait a little bit or to make sure that the television supports VGA. It seems as though Microsoft has got a little bit of a situation on its plate. Here’s a little recap from Xboxic:

Component:

  • HD DVD: max 1080i (thanks to AACS)
  • DVD: upscaled to max 480p (thanks to CSS)
  • Games: 720p upscaled to 1080p, maybe in the future there will be 1080p native games.
  • VGA:

  • HD DVD: max 1080p
  • DVD: upscaled to max 1080p
  • Games: 720p upscaled to 1080p, maybe in the future there will be 1080p native games.

    • ps3 will win in the USA and wii will win in japan.

    • There’s a boost to PS3 and Blu-Ray. :-)

Maybe there will, but they’ll look like crap. The 360 is simply not powerful enough for 1080p native games. Tons of the currently available games don’t even run at 720p, but are upsampled to 720p from lower resolutions.

That whole “1080p games on the Xbox” is simply a marketing ploy to fight Sony. Don’t fall for it.

    • IF you havent seen it yet.. Buy both blu ray and hd-dvd and youll return blu ray the picture is by far better on hd-dvd.

      I did…
