Nintendo Doubles Wii Launch Units

Nintendo has announced that they will now be shipping out 2 million Nintendo Wii units on launch day instead of the previously announced 1 million Wii units. This is really great news for gamers, parents and just about everyone who wants a Wii or wasn’t able to get their hands on a PS3. It also eliminates the process of camping outside of stores before launch day.
In case you don’t happen to get a Nintendo Wii on launch day, Nintendo has predicted that it will have 7-9 million Wii units in the 4th quarter, from October to December. Originally, Nintendo had announced it would have shipped 6 million Wii units by March 2007- it’s now looking more like 11 million units. A slap to Sony’s shortage? I think so.

Nintendo has been producing the hardware units since the end of the summer so this isn’t surprising. As you rightly stated its going to be yet another blow to Sony who has barely enough units to go around at its launch, hopefully making people who weren’t intending to pick up a Wii to think twice.

Having a whole slew of consoles on hand at launch may seem like a good thing, but having a bunch of people camping out in front of retail stores is free advertising. Get a little media coverage of people clamoring to get a limited supply of something, and people are going to want it more. The limited supply of PS3’s isn’t going to turn as many consumers away from Sony as Nintendo is hoping. It will have the opposite effect.

And predicting what affect any of these facts will have on the industry or on consumers point of view is pointless. I for one already own a 360 and plan on buying a Wii on or shortly after release. I’ve also owned a PS1 & PS2 however SONY will have to wait until XMAS of ‘07 for me to have any interest in their system.
So far the only people I’ve heard saying they MUST have a PS3 have been SONY loyalists who think this is an actual war as opposed to a marketing war. To all who manage to get a PS3 on launch… congratulations. I for one will stroll into Best Buy a week or so later and pick up a Wii without any wait or struggle and a hell of a lot more games for the money.
Not to mention the extra cash left over for my 360 list in November as well.
I wish SONY luck, because I love having competition in the marketplace. However SONY still won’t have the online experience that XBOX Live brings you. Once SONY decided to leave the online functions up to a third party and gave the developers control over their online functions they lost the online war before it even started.
XBOX360 = Best online experience and awesome gaming.
Wii = Pick up and play fun PLUS Nintendo Classics
PS3 = Great single-player experience (Once the good games are here)

I have to give nintendo props for doing this. Great that nintendo actually plans a launch the correct way with plenty of units to go around. I got my gamecube on launch day with no problem as well. Plus from their track record nintendo is the only console maker that I would trust to fork over my hard earned money for on one of the 1st batch. Nintendo really does their homework when it comes to hardware.

This is good for gamers and parents who can’t afford or get a PS3, but bad for advertising like Sickr said. I remember when the PS2 launched, and remember seeing coverage on TV of HUGE lines and shortages.
Hopefully the Wii will still get lot’s of coverage though (i’ve seen a bunch of talk shows already about how they tried the Wii).

“It also eliminates the process of camping outside of stores before launch day.”
yeah right. Nintendo has some of the most loyal fans and I’m willing to bet that they will be camping out regardless of the amount that BEst Buy has in stock.
And as for the Sony fan boy who thinks that Sony is better off by not having any units at launch… you are a fanboy. Shut up.

Awesome! I’m not even thinking about buying an XBOX360 (I was never intrested in the system) and I’m not even close to buying a PS3 (expensive) and the only console I have considered buying is the Wii (going to get one Christmas!) so this product duplication and an estimated 7-9 million by December is almost one guarenteed.

The “wii” will be on top for a while…..until sony drops there price about $200. then sony will reclaim its position of 1st place

GRAY$ON, whats stopping M$ and Nintendo from dropping their price too? Thats right, nothing. Also, I don’t think Sony wants to cut the price until the hardware isn’t costing them so much money.
Not so much, I think many people will hold out on buying a console until next year when they finally realize PS3 supply will be short for awhile. Then they will turn to either the 360 or the Wii. Also SSBB and Halo 3 are damn good convincers.

Wow 2 million units on launch is great. Having only limited supplies isn’t very good for business. I can’t wait to get the Wii. I’d love to have the PS3, but I not going to camp outside for a $500-$600 system that would not be garanteed to get on launch. I live in Minnesota, it was snowing today, and it’s barely October. I’ll prefer to walk in and get the Wii, than wait outside. I think there are more people waiting for the Wii than they are people waiting for PS3, that is why they doubled the launch units. They want to satisfy the costumer.
I will get a PS3 when I actually get the chance to go in normally, buy, and walk out with the system. I think people camped outside because they know that there is such limited units. Nintendo will now have 5 times the amount of units that Sony will have on launch.

I cant wait for the wii to come out. I really dont have anthing against the Xbox360 or PS3 but I mean all they can offer is cool graphics and online play. The Wii on the other hand provides a whole new way to play games with its control. (i cant wait to get my hands on twilight princess, mario galaxy, metroid 3, and Smash bros)

I just came up with a brilliant idea! DING!
After you buy the Wii run past the long line filled with PS3 Fanny boys. Pwnage
Don’t run too close. PS3 fanny boys are known to hold grudges! har har

Sony is getting ahead of themselves with the playstation3 and it shows because they don’t even have enough units to fill what they already sold. Add to that Gears of War looks better than any launch title on the PS3 and the 360 has a great lineup of games for the christmas season, the PS3 has nothing.
Im also definately going to get a wii. The controllers look very unique and I have never been dissapointed by nintendo, it seems like I’m being dissapointed by sony on a weekly basis, they are just not worth the time and money.
