This feature was planned for 10.3 (apple filed the patent a long time ago). It was advertised on Apple’s site, but then disappeared for unknown reasons – possibly the fact that iPod disks aren’t made for constant access (or weren’t at that time). So no, Apple is probably not working on this anymore.
