Funny, the Gamestop I went to had only 1 person in line, and in live right next to Chicago. I’m #2 for Wii and I showed up at 9:45.

Of course the lines will be longer for the wii. People knew the numbers were VERY limited for the PS3 so if people saw a line they could count and not even bother waiting. With the Wii, people knew there were more available so they were willing to wait in a longer line because their chances of getting one were still decent.

Also, people who missed out on the PS3 were more likely to get up even earlier the next time around for the Wii. Not because demand was necessarily higher but that they learned their lesson.

Yep the nintendo wii will do at least 2x better than the ps3!

At 8:00 I saw only 2 guys in line by the eb games in raleigh, nc. So I drive on work in the RTP, and called at 9:30 to two other stores and they both said, don’t bother because the line is already full. I called a local target and they said they won’t do any pre-order just get in line at 8:00am on Nov. 19th and said they nintendo will do about 4 million systems, so I should be ok for the 19th. I hope.

I had a similar experience this morning when I went to reserve my Wii. I got in line around 8:30am and was 12th in line. By 10am, there were 35-45 people waiting, with more than a few people who walked away figuring they didn’t have a chance. When the employwee opened the door at 10am, he informed everyone that there were 14 units available for preorder, counted off the lucky 14, and the rest were sent on their way. I managed to reserve my system, Red Steel, Zelda, and Madden as well. Everyone seemed in great spirits, excited, and there appeared to be very little desire by anyone to get a PS3. I think technologically, the PS3 is going to be the champ, but the Wii definately has the edge as far as being truly different and unique.

Horrible comaprison.

The PS3 had virtually no notice prior to the Preorder date. If you were lucky to get an email from GS/EB it was the afternoon before. Otherwise, the information was commonly available around 1:00am on the morning of the preorders.

The Wii preorder was known from Tuesday. I was informed at GS when I preordered the PS3 that Friday would be the day for the Wii preorders. Also, the information was publicly released on all the major sites on Wednesday.

Not saying the numbers aren’t interesting but you can’t make and apples to apples comparison. Most people were quite surprised to learn of the PS3 preorders after they were already done.

Great Comparison.

Anyone that follows the gaming sites (which is everyone who wants a PS3). Knew when the console was going on sale.

The truth is that people are plain turned-off by the price. As has been documented by several first hand accounts, people are lining up for the Wii because they want a Wii.

People lined up for the PS3 so they could sell it on ebay.

I live in Chicago and my boyfriend tried to preorder from ebgames this morning. He was there an hour before the store opened. When the store opened a guy came around to ask the people in line if they had tickets. He did not. Apparently, they had given them out much a couple of hours early so everyone who didn’t get there early enough were out of luck. They had 15 preorders available and at least 30 were there when my boyfriend was there.

I was second in line in Las Vegas at 7am and by 10am it was mayhem. I got my Wii. I called several EB and Gamestops afterwards and they all reported preorder sellouts within minutes and very long lines. If you want a Wii at launch day Nov 19th you had better camp out overnight or get there as early as possible. It is gonna be fun, fun, fun trying to get your hands on a system. Good luck!

Wow, great example of Supply & Demand. Well, you can’t say you didn’t see this coming? Right? PS3

I think it’s stupid people constantly going on about which console is better/losing/selling more etc. I would love to have either one, but I’m not taking time outta my day to go stand in line before a store opens, to spend my money on something that’s not even IN the damn store yet. It’s not even like your standing in line to purchase something where they only have a limited number in stock! Your standing in line for a limited number of PREorders.

I predict Sony’s not worried, Nintendo’s not worried… once they are on the market Sony will sell plenty of PS3’s, and Nintendo will sell plenty of Wii’s, oh and MS will still sell lots of 360’s. And in a few years it starts all over again with something new.

I’m not so sure about this whole predicament. You can really judge of preorder sales since they’re all over the place, but, if we look back on history, the console that comes out too early, like the 360, will falter. Case in point, Dreamcast. However, innovation that’s misunderstood, like the Wii, will falter as well. Again, lookit the Dreamcast. But then again, too high of a price, like the PS3, means a falter again. Case in point, Game Gear, Sega CD/Saturn, etc.

I dunno, they all have big faults, but I think the Wii will sell more simple because it’s so much cheaper.

The Sony business model has a huge flaw: it’s expensive, so significantly less people will buy it. Also, the games are more expensive: people will thus tend to be more choosy. This would be fine if Sony was making a significant profit off of the system as well, but it’s not. In fact, it’s losing over a hundred dollars per system. This has to be made up with software. But the software is expensive, and there are fewer systems to take that software. Thus, fewer games sold. I’m sure Sony could handle that loss of profit, but it just seems like a stupid idea. You can justify it all you want with Blu-Ray and hi-def and crap but when it comes right down to it, nobody wants to pay that much for anything. It’s like saying “oh that Porsche is really expensive but it’s worth it”. Nobody’s gonna buy that Porsche simply because it’s worth it, they’d only buy it if the price is reasonable.

As much as I hate the XBox, I must admit they hit the business model on the dot. Popular games + reasonably affordable system = big bucks, even if they have to make up lost money on the games. The Wii is gonna sell like hotcakes, so I think they’ll make more money simply because of that model.

But I think the 360 and Wii will come out top. Sony will go the way of Sega…

P.S. Yes, I understand the whole “longevity of PS2’s lifespan” argument, but that’s only because of the great game developers that flocked to it. Nobody wants to, basically, buy a game that will cost $660 to play. I don’t care amazing that game may be. And the whole notion of how the Gamecube failed against the PS2 despite it being cheaper argument is moot because a difference of about 40 bucks is a lot smaller than about $350.

Queueing at a game store to buy a new product? Can it get more ridiculous than that?

Why in this day and age can we not 1) Pre-order it online, and then 2) Pick it up/receive delivery on the day of release? How friggin hard would that be?!

>People are lining up for the Wii because they want a Wii.
>People lined up for the PS3 so they could sell it on ebay.

Probably true. People are even trying to sell their PS3 preorders on eBay… Regardless of whether it actually guarantees a PS3 or not.

>However, innovation that’s misunderstood, like the Wii, will falter as well.

Like the DS, you man? Judging by the games announced for the Wii, developers have learned their lessons. Lots of great, unique games - and very hard to “misunderstand” since playing with the Wii will come naturally - unlike playing with a gamepad.

With the Wii shortage and In demand some forums are saying the Xbox 360 Core unit will even it’s price with the Wii in November

I really think that while fun, trying to compare Wiis to PS3s is like comparing apples to oranges. The Wii is going to be sucessful. The PS3 is also going to be sucessful but they need to sell a ton of them to start making serious money. Wii could be the next big thing in FPS if they could get some serious third party support. I never got into the two analog stick controls for FPS. Too clunky. In the end, both systems are going to make alot of money for their perspective companies, and that is only good news for all gamers. By the way my wife is in line at the local Wal-mart. 30 lucky persons are going to take home the Wii tonight. Only 2 walked away from the same place with a PS3 just two days ago. Not because there wasn’t demand, but because there weren’t any available. Third party support could be lacking if Sony can’t get a handle on their supply chain. I think that will sort itself out. Doesn’t matter to me anyway. I won’t buy a PS3 until its under 300 bucks. That won’t happen unless Sonys Bluray takes over the market. Not likely.
