Up until now, Apple’s left radio functionality off their iPods for good reason - most people never used them. For the ones that do, third party FM adapters seem to be just fine, even if it did add some unnecessary bulk to the iPod. Now Apple’s filed a patent application that shows the iPod recording from various radio sources such as AM/FM, satellite, and WiFi.
The patent art shows that the iPod will accept accessories “to add the necessary functionality”, so it’s more than likely that the iPod won’t be doing the receiving or recording itself. The functionality features recording either a part or all of the song, then connecting your iPod to your computer later to identify the track and purchase it from the iTunes Music Store. This way, Apple retains its profit-generating store but you still get to listen to your recordings for a while.

This patent request seems odd considering earlier this week Creative announced the removal of radio recording features from future products to avoid a lawsuit with the RIAA. What’s the difference here?

I just recently bought a creative Vision M that lets me record from FM radio (not that I’d bother, I can use Napster for most songs). It sounds like Apple is tattling on its listeners when they reconnect to an online source that some piece of music is there illegitimately and the owner had better pay up.
And people wonder why the RIAA is hated.
