There’s been a lot of talk of whether or not the Nintendo Wii will have component cables available at launch for users that own big-screen TVs and want to run Wii games in progressive-scan. Yesterday, Nintendo of America commented on the subject telling us that the Wii will support 480p via component cables the day the console releases. The component cables must be bought separately for $29.99, and are only available through online retail outlets like EB Games, Best Buy, Gamestop and Circuit City. Nintendo didn’t say why the cables were only available online, but it’s not like this is the first time they’ve done this anyway. We saw the same type of thing going on when the GameCube released.
And before you ask, no, GameCube component cables will not work with the Wii. Probably because the input of the Wii (guessing) looks like it’s going to be USB. Looks like I’m going to have to order components for the Wii before I even get the console.

This is great. I have a 52 inch Mitsubishi HDTV with 2 component inputs. I will definitely take advantage of the 480p for a much better picture. I don’t think the High Definition 1080i is a factor at this time. Sony is pushing the PS3 HD-bluray but the majority of video gamers don’t own an HDTV.
See, the Wii does have *some* HD or maybe just ED but still, it shuld do well
“Probably because the input of the Wii (guessing) looks like it’s going to be USB.”
Next time, don’t guess. We already saw pictures of the Wii video output. And you probably can’t output a video signal trough USB
Actually, the AV-OUT port has just changed in size compared to the GameCube’s port, and now integrates analogue and digital out, which were previously in two different ports. The two USB ports on the back of the Wii have nothing to do with the component out.
480p is crap. what are they thinking.
