Actually, you'd be hard-pressed to get it to decode Ogg Vorbis; the MP3 decoding is done by a separate codec chip, the VS1011. I doubt the PIC18F that powers this sucker would be powerful enough to do decoding on its own.

My wife just got me this kit for my birthday. I'm really interested in finding a more powerful PIC to stick in there so I might be able to write some more fully-featured software. (In particular, the ability to play MP3s without renaming them to start with five-digit numbers, or to parse a directory structure on the SD/MMC card.) I'm also thinking of using some spare pins to hook up a serial LCD display -- that would be fun!

An so is my opinion, an open source player which plays mp3 but not ogg, that sounds strange, but neverthless a great project. Keep on rocking !!

I thought exactly the same.
An open-spec FLAC- & Ogg Vorbis-player would be great.
Next stop: The "Flogger".

What is the point of an open source "mp3 player" when the mp3 format is not open source?!?! An open source or, better, a free software ogg player - that makes sense. But an open source mp3 player? !
