We all knew it was a matter of time before that one guy got his mitts on a PS3 and spent all afternoon trying to get Linux on it. Well there’s now a video on YouTube that looks pretty legit (although let’s face it, it could easily just be thrown together) showing Linux being run on the PS3.

Looks pretty easy to boot into it too, as the guy just changed an option in the menu and then restarts the system. KDE looks smooth, graceful, and pretty usable too. Only question we have to ask is why in the hell would you care about this when you could be playing some totally sweet games?

  • That is actually Gnome ;)

  • (Only question we have to ask is why in the hell would you care about this when you could be playing some totally sweet games?)

There aren’t any, Sony has always and will always be about Hype////

  • Because the PS3 can do some truly obscene signal processing and it’s the cheapest way to get some unbelievable f-ing hardware.

  • That’s not legit….
The dunderhead just had just pre-compiled a little video of himself booting it up on another system with a bunch of drives with bogus Sony names….

The guy could have made it look legit if he put half the effort into editing this film that he did into being a stupid waste of space…
All he had to do was cut out the brief segment at the 0:15 second mark where he accesses the ‘Saved Data Utility’ and starts a video….

Sony must be so proud of it’s target demographic…

  • Not legit eh? ;) RTFM.

  • Why would we care? Because some people can’t justify the price of the PS3 unless it lets them have the fastest PC in the world for $500.

  • I dunno why everyone hates on the linux on the ps3. It’s a cheap linux cell workstation, and that will probably have way more advances in the next 5 years then most your tiny brains can imagine.

Also, it means emulation of many systems are already fully supported on the ps3.

Most people want games, some people want linux. Just because your a gamer doesnt mean someone else can’t be a geek. I have a xbox 360 and use it for my games, if I buy a ps3 it will be for linux.

  • Re k10wnsta: Erm.. linux installs on PS3 is INTENDED. Its totally legit, and quite easy to do. Heres a nice set of docs to show how – http://www.ps3bits.net/website1/files/homebrew/Installation/ps3-linux.html

On top of this, adam is quite correct. Its by far the cheapest way to develop on the Cell CPU. The 4 Cell IBM workstations start around 30K USD. The 14 Cell Blade Servers start around the 80K USD. Quite a huge price saving if you want to do some R&D on Cell…

I suspect that a consumer level Cell system thats able to be developed on, will be quite useful to many different people – especially university’s and colleges specializing in things like offline rendering, and super computer modelling.

  • All due respect to Linux users, what’s the point. so you can therefore you do. for what? I’m a systems programmer and I can perform a wide multitude of hacks with Linux & windows on my alarm clock, but why?

  • Well allan, They are saying that ps3 has let them all down and failed so far in making quality games! Heres the answer, this Sony hardware is super fast and the absent of good games, online play and just about everything else has forced us all to consider doing this and having the fastest cpu 500$ can buy. I love this Idea and will have a linstation 3 sitting next to my x360 and wii . 3 systems for different uses. SWEET!!
