Wiimote Smashes TV?

According to Engadget, some Goon was bowling in Wii Sports when disaster struck. The controller strap purportedly snapped and the Wiimote went sailing into his 60-inch TV. As you can see, the TV didn’t withstand the blow very well.

I’ve been playing Wii Sports for the past day and this seems to me an unlikely scenario. While you do indeed swing the controller around wildly, the probability of the strap snapping, losing grip of the remote and it smashing into your TV, strikes me as highly improbable.

A more likely situation would be that the man wasn’t strapped in and lost his grip on the device when throwing the ball. He probably cut the strap in a play to get Nintendo to foot the bill for him not following the clear warnings the system already offers.

Edit: So perhaps I was a bit hasty to judge this guy so harshly. It seems he might have smashed his TV while using the device properly.

  • This may be a product defect. My son’s strap also snapped within less than a few hours of use, sending the remote flying. It didn’t hit the tv, but it’s now rattling.

We’ve contacted Nintendo to see about a replacement. We’ll let you know about their response.

  • If you check out IGN (linked from link) they reported the same issue. I don’t think they’re grubbing for money :)

  • Yes the controller straps are a problem I had the same problem playing Wii Golf. No it dident hit the TV but yes the controller went flying across the room. I pieced it back together it seams to work kinda:(

  • Same thing happened to my friends wii control. The strap snapped and the controller hit the wall, luckily not the TV. The battery cover got the worst but we were able to put it back together.

    Don’t trust those straps.

  • That strap looks cut, I don’t see that much fraying at the end from overuse and failure.

  • It is somewhat off a common problem there are people around here that has had that happen to them also.

  • fuck you stupid kids even if the strap broke why would u let go of the fucking remote stupid mother fuckers

  • IGN had the same problem, but IGN’s strap was broken where it attached to the remote itself. This one is cut right in the middle. Kind of strange, isn’t it?

I’d also like to throw in that if you’re dumb enough to play a console for 24 hours straight and sweat _that_ much you deserve a broken TV. Seriously kids, sleep is good no matter what the TV says.

  • This is a fake :)
