Samsung Blackjack: Q Who?

Meet my new favorite phone. The Samsung Blackjack from Cingular is a veritable wunderkind amongst the sea of comparatively ordinary competitors. Not only will it turn heads every time you whip it out, but it’ll outperform any other smart phone in the building, block, neighborhood, etc.
The most striking aspect of the Blackjack is its size, measuring just 4.45 x 2.32 x 0.46-inches, it’s only slightly larger than a Razr (2.08 x 3.85 x 0.5-inches) and smaller than its closest competitor the Moto Q (4.6 x 2.5 x 0.5-inches). Unlike other smart phones that I’ve used, it fits in my pocket quite happily, which is really huge boon.
But don’t think it’s just a pretty face. The Blackjack packs a punch like no other. Beneath its exterior lies some muscle in the form of a 220Mhz TI OMAP dual-core processor and and 64MB RAM/128MB ROM. Which works out to more than enough to get the job done.
After using a Cingular 8125 for about a year I had come to loathe Windows Mobile 5. It’s slow and clunky and almost always a hassle to work with. I had come to old the opinion that WinMo5 was to blame for the 8125 sucking. Wrong I was.
The Blackjack uses the same OS to much better precision. Screen swap quickly with no perceivable lag and applications present hardly any wait time at all. Agile Messenger, for instance, starts in seconds.
Out of the box it supports essentially every email platform imaginable, including push and POP3/IMAP4. I guess that’s sort of bittersweet. It’s nice being able to stay connected, but being connected all the time can be a bit tiresome. Can’t blame the Blackjack for that though, it’s just doing it’s job.
By far the biggest drawback of the Blackjack is its battery life, a problem that Samsung seems to have realized with the inclusion of two batteries and a standalone charger. The phone literature says it can get up to 5.5-hours of talk time but I’m exceedingly skeptical of this claim. It also claims the phone can standby for 11 days which is nowhere near possible. It goes through half a battery sitting on my desk idly for a day. I’m not sure what conditions it would require to achieve these claims, but I’m guessing neither conditions would be real world.
The other slight of the Blackjack actually stems from its small size. The keys are tiny, especially for someone with mammoth hands like myself. It takes some getting used to, but it’s doable.
Another great cosmetic draw is the SXGA screen that can project a 1280 x 960 (OK so really it’s a QVGA screen that can display 320×240. It’s not SXGA, but it looks damn good anyway. Thanks Richard for catching the oversight). It might not be the best phone screen I’ve encountered, but it’s definitely near the top.
There are a bunch of Cingular specific features, particularly some music related one. Aside from the XM radio streaming, there is one other function of debatable use, a Music ID service. Basically, when you hear a song that you like but are unable to name it, get your Blackjack out and have Music ID place the song for you. I tried it about five songs. It’s pretty accurate as far as popular and mainstream songs go (the stuff you can name easily), but it utterly fails at the harder stuff; the stuff you really need it for.
Phone reception is excellent. No dropped or missed calls yet. The dialing system works fine and you’re able to access the contacts list quickly through a dedicated main screen button.
Another nice touch is the scroll wheel that allows for quick browsing through windows. If you have a huge and sprawling contacts list like I do, then this will be a welcome feature.
Oh there is one other little thing that I guess maybe might be of some interest to possibly a few of you: The Blackjack supports UMTS/HSDPA wireless. It’s fast, fast, fast. Having used EDGE on my 8125 for awhile, I had begun to think that “wireless broadband” was just a PR term. Something publicists threw around to make mobile products sound fancy. I didn’t really consider the implications of true wireless broadband, but I stand corrected.
I tried the Blackjack in NYC, Chicago and New Orleans. NYC had the worst 3G access of the three. Chicago and New Orleans have equally awesome coverage, with my little 3G icon always there.
Given the Blackjack’s svelte exterior, fancy features and general cool factor, I think Samsung and Cingular have a real winner here. As far as smart phones go, I really don’t think anything better is currently available. I’m giving the Blackjack best bytes and am going to go out on a limb and say it’s the best all-around phone I’ve ever used.
It’s available now from Cingular for $199.99 with a two year contract or for $449.99 if you don’t want to sign your soul away.

Wow. Is it CDMA or GSM? And only Cingular offers it? Pssshh….

It’s GSM.

Blake,
The word is that if you set the 3G (assuming you’re in that area) to off and let it just use EDGE/GSM (until you need 3G) it will last a LOT longer.

I see what looks like the windows OS. That makes me think of my Motorola Q, two minute boot time and constant crashes. That makes me want to bang my head against my desk.

Actually this phone wasn’t slow or clunky when booting up, I got my grubby paws on this a few weeks ago. While it is Windows OS, the design and size were huge plus factors for me. It’s a great phone but unfortunately it’s on Cingular or else I’d pick one up. It’s got UMTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1280×960 resolution? I’ve got a Blackjack and it I’m not mistaken, the screen resolution is 320×240. Um, that’s a rather large difference. If the screen was really 1280×960, do you realize how small everything on-screen would be?

My guess, if its anything like the winmob palm, the reason the battery life is horrible is becasue WinMob “push” email is constantly using the battery (inefficiently) to check the servers. I have yet to have seen a device that is as efficient at the crackberry on battery life. See the following entry for a full review:

Uh, the Q is still .45 inches wide, excepting the bulge, which isn’t being considered for the Blackjack either, to my understanding. Want me to take a picture of my Q next to a ruler? I think that’s been done by someone on the internet somewhere. Anyways, the Q is generally reported as .45 inches–SEE ALSO the comparing done when the Dash / HTC Excalibur came out and was constantly compared to the Q. It was deemed fatter, the Q was thinner, and the numbers used by everyone (wired had a lovely 3d graphic) were .45 vs whatever else.
See also: screen dimensions. (not talking about the wack resolution you cite)
Anyhow.
Blake Robinson (Who am I?)

OK. The phone supports multiple resolutions. SXGA (1280×960), VGA (640×480), QVGA (320×240), QCIF (176×144).
I haven’t seen it next to the Q, but many people have said that the Q is larger.

Are you talking about the camera resolution, or the screen? Because the camera is 1.3 megapixels.. which is 1280×1024… in which case you’re still wrong about the top resolution.

Wow. I’m an idiot. You’re absolutely right. It is the camera resolutions that I’m talking about. I guess I just sort of glossed over that. My bad guys. Apologize for the retardation.

I’m using a Samsung i730 on Verizon’s EVDO network…. I like what I’ve read about this phone and was strongly considering jumping ship for a smaller/ faster phone…. I’ve read that WM Smartphone vs PPC Phone Edition has limitations! A 220Mhz TI OMAP dual-core processor? How does this compare to my 520Mhz processor?

I’ve been using my Nokia E62 for several months and picked up my BlackJack this week, too. Very disappointed by the battery life. I could not spend even one day in Manhattan without the battery dying. Got NYC at 10am (1 hr drive) and the battery was dead by 4pm. During this time I made several phone calls, wrote and replied to e-mails, downloaded a PDF and PowerPoint (I happily use GoodLink). Cingular 3G is pretty bad in the NJ/NYC area. Very spotty.
The device does feel more like a phone then any other PDA I’ve used. However, I think I will be returning it next week. Even though you get two batteries it’s still a pain to have to carry an extra battery.
The Nokia E62 lasts at least 2 days with usage and by far has the best battery life out of any PDA I’ve ever used. However, if you’re not using GoodLink the e-mail/calendar/contacts experience will not be good (no pun intended).
Overall, I think the form factor is the best feature. Apparently, the Cingular video requires a subscription in addition to the data plan. The document reader (Picsel) is included and reads MS Office and PDFs but they are pretty hard to view on a small screen.

I just bought a Blackjack and it lives up to the article. I also read about bad battery life, but so far, the battery has held up of all day use using the 3G network and casual/normal usage of other features. It comes with two batteries too. Not a lot of accessories for it yet (like a screen saver), but they will come. Great phone!

Hmmm… maybe this will be the replacement for my aging Sidekick 2. I’ll look into it.. I don’t know, there’s just something I don’t like about paying $300 to upgrade when I could get something like this for much cheaper!

actually the 3g network has nothing to wtih the quality of the camara. For example there’s a sony ericsson phone w810i that has a 2mpixel camera that’s not a 3g phone. The camera on the blackjack is not 2mpixel but its still good.

Is there any software that will allow you to use the laptop screen when
using the internet function of the blackjack? I would like to connect to the
laptop via the usb cable and use the larger screen of the laptop while using the edge/3G function of the phone. (I am not talking about synching the two devices. I know how to do that.)
nina (Who am I?)

When you thether on your laptop from your phone, your laptop’s connection is the same as your phone. So then you are able to use the 3g network if available. Get the connection manager software from cingular.com/connectionmanager and install it to your laptop and connect ur phone and open the connction manager and just use your laptop. Should work

I was trying to use a sound clip for a ring tone. I was able to sync it into “my music” on the BlackJack, but I can’t figure out how to get it into a ring tone… Is this because there’s a monopolly to funal people into concessions for buying ringtones? I couldn’t find what I wanted to use for my ring tone on any of those sites anyway… I remember on one of my previous Sprint phones that you could record your own voice -or anything you wanted and use it for a ring tone…

I just figured it out… You have to use the menue que when looking through “my stuff” and “set as” ringtone…. It’s a smart phone that’s only as smart as you are i guess… With my learning curve it’s gunna take me awhile!
Still Confused

When I try to “set as” ringtone it tells me the file is too big, “can’t be bigger than 300KB, but the file is 3.5 MB, how do I get around this? I have a memory card that has 4GB, but the phone won’t let me use a custom ring tone if it is on my memory card v. the file on the phone itself in “my stuff.” How’d you get around the memory issue?

Picked up a Blackjack last month to use for work and I really like it. The internet works well and the phone features work well. Battery life is fine for day to day use, I just throw it on the charger at night and it has never let me down during the day. We are in DC and the 3G coverage so far has been excellent. I bought an aluminum case, designed for the extended battery, for the Blackjack to protect the screen and it fits like a glove. There have been a few times when I thought the case affected the signal strength, but I popped it out of the case and the signal strength did not appear to improve. Biggest plus is I don’t have to carry a separate PDA and I’m hooked up to the office where ever I am.
Great phone!

My Blackjack from Zoomcell.com shipped with only 1 battery. Any idea how I might get another one… as should be included?? Zoomcell.com says that 1 is battery is standard even though the manual clearly shows 2 batteries.

I just got the Blackjack and I have a couple questions:
1. How can I access my Microsoft Word files from my phone? I used the CD to install ActiveSync but I still couldn’t figure it out. It would only let me sync Favorites and Windows Media.
2. There is a strange icon on my screen and I don’t know what it means. It looks like two triangles side-by-side, turned sideways, and they have two sticks. Does anyone know what this is?

There are a lot program that can run on WM5 SP platform such as the cleaarview viewer that can read word, powerpoint, excel, pdf files. Also you can customize the home screen using xml editor or download from the web. I tried to upload the pictures but don’t know how to. If anyone interest can contact me eccwong@gmail.com

Thanks Kevin. I browsed around the net shortly after I posed my questions and discovered that it was indeed the Bluetooth indicator, and promptly felt like a fool.
Cingular helped me figure out how to access my Word docs by phone. I didn’t realize I had to actually copy/paste; drag them into my phone window. I thought once I sync-ed up they would magically appear on my phone. Again, promptly felt like a fool.
I sense a recurring theme.
Thanks guys.

I just got my Blackjack yesterday and am still trying to figure out how to scroll thru my address book (contacts ?) to go straight to a certain letter - like I could on my other phone — (ie, pushing “H” when I need “husband”) when I push a letter, everything in the contacts with that letter (no matter where in the name) comes up — any and all help appreciated! I’m excited about the phone, but frustrated because I can’t figure out how to use it. sigh.

Hi Lisa,
You’ve probably figured this out by now, but if you keep holding the top or bottom of the silver 4-way navigation key, you will see a big letter show up. The big letter scrolls through the alpahabet until you release the button on the letter of the alphabet you want (e.g. ‘H’). Then you’ll a listing of names that begin with the selected letter. You have to press the button for a few seconds for the big letter to show up, but it works. Hope this helps!
Kimberly (Who am I?)

Just to clarify, Lisa, you have to be in the contacts section when you press the silver navigation key. If you press it intermittently, you’ll go through each name individually, but if you keep holding the key, eventually a big letter will show up for you to select which section of the alphabet you want.

deborah….when you open up the mms you hit menu - attached files- then menu again, then save then you can rename it whatever you choose. Then a message will come up letting you know where the picture was stored. You can access ur pictures by hitting menu from the main screen then “my stuff” then my pictures. They should be there.
As for LISA there is nothing you can do about hitting a letter and everything containing that letter comes up… ive checked. You’ll get use to it.
