Seriously, what is so freakin’ amazing about an Apple-branded phone?

If it IS running OSX, then I could see getting excited about it. Like having a computer/phone/mp3 player all in one…and it better have WiFi if this is the case.

BUT

If it’s just an Apple coated phone with iTunes integration and “catchy” advertisements to make it look uber cool, it’s nothing to even care about.

Phones with MP3 support are a dime a dozen nowadays. NOT a big friggin’ deal.

Anything that lowers my gadget count works for me. I love my iPod and my Razr, but I personally would love to have something that combines both.

Someone else pointed this out - carrier independence is a very big thing. They would have to have GSM and CDMA chips on the same circuit board (and for the other standards). No one else has done this to my knowledge. Why NOT Apple? It makes sense.

I’ll be watching.

Sounds lovely, but they didn’t mention a thing about the iPhone having a camera. The MP3/iTunes features aren’t very interesting to me at all; my phone now can play MP3’s if I really wanted it to.

However, I have been looking for a slim phone with a full keyboard, and if the “slide-out keyboard” is only a number pad, I’m gonna be mad.

Uh, can’t they just write a few lines of code to prevent the MP3 player from draining, say, 50% of the battery?? Then they could have a cheaper battery and allow people to decide if they want to save their battery for the phone or not.

Or is that giving people too much control over their own electronics again? Maybe that extra battery is to run another layer of DRM ?

Sounds like my Orange M600 with a 4GB SD card in it, or I suppose the slide out keyboard makes it the O2 XDA Mini…

2nd battery is a cute idea
Small as shit with a slide out keyboard though - so either it’s not small as shit or the keyboard is unusable.

Nothing said that’s particularly interesting though.

Ooooh, that’s a tough one.

I’m a heavy proponent of smartphones and being able to track ToDo’s, grab email, play games, etc on the go, so this nebulous “cool OS” needs a little more detail.

On the other hand, carrier independence, dual-batteries, more convergence… this is starting to sound like a “smartphone” that could supplant the Treo/WinMob devices in the minds of the many.

Apple’s managed to make buying music cool - I wonder if ubiquitous access to the iTunes store can increase that trend…

Webonics: I think this slip by Kevin will only fan the flames of rumors and excitement. This phone has been rumored since 2002 according to John Gruber. The iphone is vaporware until I see Steve Jobs say “One more thing”.

On what Kevin says, I think I would have to pick up that phone if it includes all that he says it does. Oh and it would have to make phone calls too.

An iphone that is carrier , and even network , independent would be a monumental shift in the American cell phone market. Now when shopping for a carrier, the phones they provide don’t matter. Lower costs service, or even gasp, quality customer service will separate providers.

Kevin Rose is pretty reliable when it comes to all things Apple. I hope that he didn’t jeopardize a source at Apple in the process of this DiggNation podcast.

I have to agree with Richard. I think the dual battery concept is practical for supporting a combo iTunes/iPhone model. But there has be a cost in the weight of the handset.

Pricing seems good. I still wonder about the integration with OSX or if it will be limited to phone and itunes functionality only. I would like to see email integration and calendar/contact synchronization as well.

My boss is a Mac-fanatic and I think he asks me about the “iPhone” just about every 2 days. Hopefully this video will tide him over at least to the holidays. :-D

This could be my first mac :)
touchscreen and slide out keyboard, and a 4GB memory to boot. i have a treo and a video ipod, and don’t listen to music that much since carrying a seperate devide that is also huge sucks. As long as it’s smaller than the treo.

And if this ipod phone hooked up via usb is also a virtual hard drive, this could be very very cool.

I like the 2 battery idea, hopefully there is some smarts to this. Meaning if 1 battery is being used for mp3, and that drains off, you get the choice of using your phone battery. Or vice versa.

The question is if it truly supports EVDO on verizon/sprint or HSDPA for Cingular. That would be even cooler.

$249 sounds extremely cheap, unless it was subsidized fairly heavily.

The dual battery thing sounds interesting, and exactly something that Apple would come up with, but again costly and you would think it would add to the heft of the phone.

Is the slideout keyboard a QWERTY? hmmm. I’m picturing something like the Samsung vertical sliders versus an HTC Wizard for example. Apple would want to hit the sweet spot and that’s just not QWERTY (yet).
