Apple Rumor Convergence: The Truth is Out Where?

Let’s double up on the Apple rumor mongering, shall we? Just a few days ago, our own Vince brought you the rumor that Apple was in serious manufacturing talks with Taiwanese factories for a new tablet-style portable device with docking station.
Sure, that’s fine, it’s a rumor we see more frequently than a new episode of Lost. But then another rumor comes along stating that Apple is putting the finishing touches on its thinnest portable yet, ostensibly a 12-inch widescreen MacBook even more svelte than the current lineup. That would put it in the roughly .75-inch-range or smaller. Even more, the rumors state that the device would keep its optical drive and sport a dual-core proc.
What, dear reader, if these two portable Macs were actually one in the same? A docking station would make perfect sense as a way to allow the portable to keep its optical drive while remaining thin. Apple tried the same scheme before with the popular Duo line, there’s no reason to think it’s given up on the idea.
Both rumors also indicate a Q1-07 launch, and are both in about the same stage of development. Could this simply be two sides of the same Apple branded coin?
Tell us what you think.

Would apple really come out with a device that doesn’t work with most of its software ( pen input is a whole different ball game) months before introducing leopard?

@ brklynsurfer,
Just because Apple said Srping doesn’t mean then mean spring. Apple has a long history of saying one thing any doing another. Take the iPod - one year they said video wasn’t the way to go, and the next they released an iPod that played video with Disney signed up. That whole getting Disney on board (before Jobs was on the board), designing the iPod (for video), organizing a manufacturer, choosing materials etc. would have taken a year in itself, that means as they were saying they didn’t think video was the way to go, they were designing a product for exactly the oppisite. And that’s just one of many many examples of this. Apple does its business in a very schizophrenic way. Steve Jobs said Apple would never get into the cellphone market, and they’re just about to contradict with that too.

Is it not just good business to “cover your bases”?
They may not think it is a good idea but that doesn’t stop a good, smart business them from researching and developing alternatives that may or may not come to fruition…

Tablet: 12″ screen or smaller, touch or stylus. WiFi. USB2. Bluetooth. And that’s all! What do you do with it? It is an Apple Remote Desktop. It hooks thru WiFi and/or the Internet to ANY MAC and becomes a second screen. You control it through Inkwell or plug in a mouse and/or keyboard. Think about it. Light, solid, incredibly powerful. Run any app at full power on any Mac, get results on your tablet. Print to bluetooth printer or USB printer attached to tablet, file transfer to USB disk or key or Bluetooth to phone. Watch video on this screen streamed from a Mac. $400.

I speculated the same thing the day the second “new Macbook” rumor came out. I just don’t see how two new portables could be released in the same quarter, but hey, I’ve been wrong before.
