Nintendo of America’s top guy Reggie Fils-Aime stated in an interview that online Wii gaming won’t be available until Q2 2007. He implied that the first of the multiplayer enabled games will start to drop in March and that there should be something of an onslaught following that.
I’m not really sure how I feel about this. Six months after launch seems like a particularly long time for Wii owners to have to wait for one of the most standard features of next gen consoles: Online multiplayer action.
It sort of bugs me that companies launch products just to get them out of the door and then customers have to wait months just to get the features they were promised.
Online Wii gaming will roll out Q2 2007, sez Reggie [engadget]

I guess will just have to wii on eachother until then.
Seems like no online multiplayer sort of takes the “we” out of Wii?
Oh well, I would still like to have one, maybe I can pick on up after Christmas.
Well i’m not against waiting at all for the feature. The wii is a very reasonable price with some good games that are out now. Well really you could play wii sports and be happy for many hours. The system has very few reported bugs. And they are easier to get then the PS3. I am glad it was out because if they would have waited I would have bought a PS3 or xbox 360 then would have been mad that I didn’t wait for the great wii.
Most people after 6 months would start to become bored by their new electronic toy. But in 6 months we wii owners will get a new feature that will refresh the way we feel about the system. We will need new games and it will become hours of entertainment again.
Yes I wish that we would have the feature now but like I said I’m okay with waiting.
“I guess wii are not the world.”
“Come together, right now, just not over wii.”
“Take, these broken wiings.”
Sorry. Monday = horrific pun day. Anyone else? This thing on?
I believe the Xbox 360 is the way to go as far as consoles are concerned.
Until then, it’s more “Yoo” than “Wii.”
Jeremy makes a great point though – 6 months after conquering Wii Sports and Zelda, your machine gets a new featureset. Did xBox Live debut on Day 1?
Xbox Live went online a year after the console launched, on November 22nd…of 2002.
Not sure you can really compare the two scenarios…considering Microsoft gave Nintendo 4 years to catch up
Catch-22. We ding the product guys for jamming everything into one release and getting things wrong, then we ding those who stage it out.
Over at TechCrunch, we listen to the 37Signals guys and 100 other Web2.0 companies talk about how to build the minimum, launch, and adapt. Why can’t we be ok with that approach when it comes to consumer electronics.
I, for one, would love to see about half of the features on most devices cut out. Lets start with speakers and tuners on 42″ flat panel displays. Get it right, evolve, get it righter…
i have 3 wiis do you
Nintendo has long said that they are wary of the business model in online gaming, and speculate on the profit margins sony and microsoft have made.
Second, playstation 2 and xbox did not originally have multiplayer games, and this was a feature added on later to the consoles, not as a mainstay.
As this is Nintendo’s first attempt with online gaming (barring the limited broadband/dialup access that gamecubers had), I think a little patience is in order.
As for me, I’ll be waiting for Smash Brothers Brawl multiplayer.
