It’s a cold comfort, but BenQ has officially apologized for using 9/11 photos in their MusiQ advertising.
While Gandhi and Einstein have been used to make us Think Different and absolute horrors — including this one — have been used to sell all manner of things, I think this might be a little too close to the bone for many markets. This is an MP3 player. I assure you, BenQ marketers, the MusiQ doesn’t quite warrant this level of imagery. Up next! The Motorola Rpufnnkng!

Just a minor speedbump for BenQ. They’ll stay in business as long as Hasbro keeps rebranding their two year old products and peddling them to kids at an 700% markup.

Saw this in Shanghai two years ago and they were selling it for $15.
I still don’t see the connection to 9-11 and I doubt anyone would have if it weren’t mentioned first. To me it just looks like a futuristic ruined city or battle zone. It even looks like there are patrol ships hovering in the background. The imagery says “futuristic rebel” to me although not convincingly and not enough to sell me the product. But this WTC junk is just people looking for controversy to make themselves feel better.
i stayed out of the first round, people get too uppity about these types of things, but they admitted they were wrong so now i can poke fun at them, hehe.
i wonder what benq would think if, i don’t know, TidyBowl used a clip of the hiroshima blast knocking down building and trees in an ad. can you picture it?
“Just drop one in and [BOOM] let the freshness begin!”
seriously, they knew what they were doing, everyone from the prez to rosie will be talking about this… “Tonight on 60 minutes: BenQ, makers of blah, blah, blah”…good or bad, it’s all about publicity; not to mention 90% of the rest of the world doesn’t care or just ‘laughed’ about it.
as someone who was there, i assure you that’s the WTC
I agree with Wallosoup. If you look for some connection to everything and 9/11 I’m sure you’ll find it. I thought the ad was great, something like “when the world ends, you’ll still have music” is an awesome caption to a photo of a man wielding an MP3 Player in the ruins of the apocalypse. Turn off your Toby Keith and Keith Urban cds and stop making everything out to be some reference to 9/11.
Ryan, you forgot Alan Jackson :)
wallosoup and ryan: sorry, it is not a stretch to make the connection – the image uses the iconic lower architecture of the towers to hawk a crappy MP3 player.
See the original post for linked pictures of the trade center before and after.
It is the WTC remains.
