Official PSP DevKit Gets Pulled From eBay

Seems that yesterday, someone spotted an official Sony PSP Developer’s Kit on eBay. With a little less than 2 days left on the auction, the highest bid was only $329—lower than I would have expected. According to the auction, up for grabs was a PSP, cables, and a developer’s PC for programming and compiling games. The ultimate homebrewer’s fantasy.
From the forums:
” From what we’ve gathered, this station is used to both test and compile games for the PSP. It is not clear whether or not work-in-progress games are stamped with the official Sony digital signing algorithm (allowing it to work on the PSP without the need of homebrew hacks) with this hardware, but the winner of this auction will likely gather some sort of cool information that could be used for the benefit of the homebrew community.”
Unfortunately, the auction was eventually pulled by eBay. Looks like Sony found out that one of their “lesser-known” developers was trying to make a quick buck. However it’s probably only a matter of time before another one is listed in the near future. Kind of like OJ’s canceled book.

Looks like someone’s trying to get rid of a PSP and an old computer all at once. You know for sure this is an official dev kit?

Yeah, I’m pretty sure the PC in that pic is older than I am… and I’m getting old.

Well this looks pretty bad cos if some mfing hacker tries to make games, this could POSSIBLY hurt official game developers quite badly (even if it’s just one I think). So I’m glad it got pulled before it sold :D

If anyone is in doubt that the PSP as a game platform is dead along with UMD, this is the canary in the coal mine my friends.
What the PSP duo should be:
Same form factor, maybe thiner and with two analog buttons.
An 80 gig hard drive should replace the UMD.
Improved graphics etc.
A free itunes like software to manage games, videos, music, pics with supper fast conversions and downloads. No buggy, half baked Sony consumer software!
Embrace homebrew, allowing people to upload there own creative content.
Firefox browser
Will Sony ever give its fans this. No. Will Sony sell a new PSP on the promise of something like this? Absolutely!
If Sony became two separate companies the “mighty Sony” might come back and kick ass again. 1 Company to make Hardware and Software. And 1 company to manage creative content ( in-house games, music, movies).

I agree doc. Sony’s stuff has really been slipping. UMD=Probably the worst format decision ever! I’ve got a good idea. Let’s create a format that’s only compatible with our products and assume it’s going to last. That’s sarcasm, Sony, in case you didnt’ get it. I feel sorry for those of you who paid for UMD movies. They should allow you to send in your UMD movies in exchange for the DVD version.

I have a 286, a serial cable and a Gameboy… can I sell that as a dev kit on eBay?

I totally disagree with you brklynsurfer, putting two analog buttons on a later psp would screw us current psp owners over (unless it would be like a PSP2 where it could play original PSP games)!!! cos the devs would create games only for those PSPs!!! Plus UMD is good (for games) UMDs were never meant to play movies they were created so they could fit in the PSP!
Maybe they could just come with a Dual Layered UMD for extra space.
And an 80GB harddrive? WHAT?! That would increase the cost of it too much! and would need a lot extra space! which means the PSP would have to be much bigger! Then it becomes NOT portable anymore!! How would that fit in your f****** pocket?!
It also doesn’t matter that much about the music. You buy the system solely (cant spell) for the friggen games!!
But I do somewhat agree with homebrew like a firefox browser.

The PSP2 will have UMD2 - Blue Ray edition.

LOL @ what Paul said LMAO! No I reckon if there were to be PSP successor it would still use UMDs but Dual Layered ones. Instead of being 1.8GB they would be 3.6GB, that’s my guess anyway.

Ok first of all samsung has made a 1.8 inch hard drive that holds 60GB and do you think that will make it any bigger??NO. infact i bet that it will be smaller thinner and it will have a built in camera and A/V outpost so that you can connect it to your TV! I’d buy it and use my old one for homebrew.
