A representative for Qualcomm stated recently that Cingular would be launching 7.2Mbps HSDPA in January. This purported bandwidth leap is nearly double the speed of current HSDPA, which tops out at 3.6Mbps, and about half the speed of HSDPA’s theoretical tops of 14.4Mbps.
As the proud owner of a Samsung Blackjack, an HSDPA equipped device, I’m rather elated to the HSDPA bandwidth building so quickly. If it keeps on this trend, perhaps people will be abandoning home broadband in lieu of mobile broadband much the same as people has shunned land line telephones in favor of cells.

That is an interesting comment Blake, speaking about the commercialization of wireless broadband internet by phone companies, or information companies in general.
What are the requirements that are placed on these towers which run on HSDPA broadband internet? How do they compare to what cell towers use/put out?
It would be interesting to see if companies which promote the public promotion of wireless internet, such as Google, pursue technology like this, emulating the way of the cell phone tower, or if they continue with current technology and simply build a lot of wireless hotspots across a town.
This goes hand in hand with the upcoming release of Office 2007 which will require a lot of bandwidth for enterprise customers. Is Microsquish pushing this? VoIP over HSDPA? Free calls to Canada, Europe, and even Asia??? Calls to computers anywhere in the world. I can’t wait for that! Any details on the upspeed? Live podcasts… the possibilites are limitless.
Blake, in reality do you get 3.6 Mbps? Also I think these data rates are measured in bit per second and not bytes per second. there are 8 bit in a byte…i think , i could be wrong. Also what kind of latency do you get Blake? Once your connected is the latency gone? IMHO i would prefer the open protocol of WiFi over these closed corporate networks.
arghh.. I just got the verizon evdo cards, and to be honest, it’s not that fast. I gotta figure out how to make it not connect to the 1xrTT, ad only EVDO. When it’s EVDO, it’s ok, mostly 600kbps. 1xrTT, it’s dial up.
I have a week left to maybe switch to sprint EVDO-A, but wasn’t even considering Cingular given their HSDPA coverage today…
Now I might have a 2 year contract with Verizon with no EVDO-A in sight :(

Cingular is sitting pretty with their HSDPA roll out. Sure they are second to the market behind EVDO, but they are much more prepared for the future. Anyone know what the estimated max speed of EVDO is? It looks like HSDPA is expected to go as fast as 14.9mb/s…
Now if they could get coverage everywhere…
Will this be a gradual roll-out as EVDO? I live in central Illinois and just noticed this week that my “1X” indicator on my Treo 700p changed to “EV.” It was like, finally. Then the rss lines light up with news about HSDPA.

HSDPA will roll out just as EV-DO has rolled out, and DOrA will roll out – in a patchwork. Lucrative big city markets first. Smaller, less dense markets later. Middle of nowhere never. HSDPA and DOrA will perform comparably, from a user perspective. They’ll be better than EDGE, UMTS or EV-DO. They’ll not come close to touching the speed of Wi-Fi. They’ll have broader coverage for a long time. But you’ll never see that peak speed.
