Sony Only Gets Out 197,000 PS3s

There’s no way that Sony will make its forecast for 1 million units in the U.S. this calendar year

- NDP Group

Before the PlayStation 3 was released on Nov. 17, Sony had promised the public 400,000 PS3 units on launch day. NDP Group has done some research, and as it turns out, Sony only got out 197,000 units on launch day. This explains all the crazed events that took place the week of the 17th.

As for the competition, Nintendo claims it sold over 600k units in the first eight days of the Wii’s release. This is all in contrast Microsoft, who sold over 500k of its Xbox 360 consoles in the month of November—which was largely due to the release of Gears of War.

Personally, I don’t care if Sony misses its target this year, however, I do care if Sony doesn’t tend to early adopters of the PlayStation 3, which seems to be a real problem right now. None of the reported problems of the console have been fixed since it launched (mine has actually gotten worse with the updates), and Sony hasn’t given us any solutions to any of the problems. With all the bad press, reviews and customer complaints, it’s no surprise the PlayStation 3 has had the worst launch of the next gen consoles.

Say it ain’t so Joe! Or Raj.

I’ve tried my hardest to be a PS3 support, or at least someone who isn’t rabidly biased against the PS3, but so many things are working agianst it. This is just bad play on the part of Sony!

It seems like something so simple, producing a reasonable amount of units for release, but all these huge manufacturers struggle with the concept of preparation! These are things you learn in management 101, providing enough photocopies of your presentation for everyone and their mother.

Sony seems to be trying to do everything they can to screw up the release of one of the biggest projects they’ve ever run, and they can’t do anything but screw up everything.

I may just go out and buy an xBox 360 or a Wii because of how stupid Sony is being.

Jon - Don’t you think most of Sony’s stuff is a little half-baked. Someone said it the other day…Sony needs to break up a little. They are too damn big. You ever try calling their tech support? It’s a phone tree jungle out there.

I’ll start worrying about the number of consoles that are available when Grand Turismo HD comes out. 1080p driving goodness, I can’t wait. Until then I’ll let others be trampled and raped on ebay.

Ezekial - That is exactly the problem with Sony. Absolutely, the problem with any corporation, is that as they bigger, they’re bureacracy gets bigger at an exponential rate, resulting in these crap conferences where idiots who know nothing about a console speak about the system that hasn’t been built yet, or about video games that don’t exist.

Sony needs to take a step down from their platform and really look at the market they’re trying to appeal to, not this market of young adults with over 2k to drop on a next-gen console system, but rather the same teens/young adults who bought the PS2 or the xBox.

New technology is great as long as I can afford it, and that is what these companies should be working on. I supposed that is why the Wii is doing better than crap in this race.

Maybe we should start a Sony death watch. The sad thing is that these are top executives making poor decisions. But when its time to “restructure” for Wall Street, its the workers who put their heart into it every day that are going to get the axe, by the thousands.

I wouldn’t recommend Sony computing products to my worst enemy. I will admit that I have owned some decent Sony products in the past. A miniDV cam and a PS2. The PS2 was pretty cool when it came out even though their was no hard drive option initially. Really, the only reason why I got a PS2 was to play GT3. My purchase was game driven. If they had GT3 for Xbox I never would have purchased a PS2. I have since sold my PS2 and the only time I come into contact with a Sony product is if one of my vain clients has one of their lappys. One Sony laptop that I setup recently felt like a childs toy and this is a $2500 computer. I wanted to put a $100 Laptop sticker on it and send it to the third world. I hope that Fujitsu crushes them in the Asian markets.

I wish Sony would get their act together and not let their name be put in the dirt.

And I third the deathwatch. BlueRay has a graveplot already reserved next to BetaMax.

The other 203,000 PS3’s were stolen by the same guys in London who lifted the Xbox360. Where are all those Xboxes anyway?
