Wii Strap Resolved
by Blake Robinson on December 8, 2006

If you felt no compulsion to use the Wii Strap Fix from earlier this week, you might be OK anyway. Reports are streaming from Australia that the faulty straps have already been updated to new, thicker straps. This will presumably fix the problem, though it still couldn’t hurt to use some of that fishing line just to be safe. Just a thought.

Nintendo improves Wii remote strap strength [Shacknews]

  • so now that the point of weakness has been moved from the strap to the device, the question is: how long will that little piece of plastic hold? [is it reinforced somehow with a pin/metal casing/etc?]

  • Instead of shear plastic on the outside of the wii controller they should have some texture or foam pad. Your hands can get pretty sweaty when using that thing. Ideally it should never leave your had right?

  • Haha, probably not very long. However, plastic if it isn’t subjected to repeated and strong shear forces from the wire will probably last a while. As far as if it’s reinforced, definitely doesn’t look like it, looks like it was nolded and then cut out.

I still don’t get why Nintendo is being so skimpy with this strap. I would assume they’d try to use a larger shoelace/flat sided strap because it stays on the wrist better, as well as looking nicer than a ratty piece of string, in addition to be a better option for securing something in general.

  • I’ve had the wii since launch and ever since the stories have surfaced about people flinging their wii remotes across the room I’ve felt that these people must be complete idiots. It’s simple, don’t let go of the freagin’ remote right?

Well, perhaps my initial opinion on this topic was unfair. Last night I was playing the wii sports bowling game, and I had just completed my 8th strike in a row. I was on my way to the “perfect game” and my palms started getting sweaty. Of course, in my excitement it didn’t really phase me that my grip on the remote was becoming less than sufficient. I went for the strike and the wii just slipped out of my hand. Fortunately, the strap didn’t break but beleive me, had the strap snapped, my TV would have been hit.

Needless to say, I didn’t get my perfect game, but I think it would have been nice if the controllers had incorporated some kind of gel grip along the sides.

  • Johnal - I agree. It’s kind of like sueing Micky D’s after spilling hot coffee on yourself. You mean I’m supposed to drink this hot coffee hot? Just wipe ur hand when it gets sweaty. I still think shear plastic wasn’t the greatest idea.
