Sony-Ericsson Z558 being an exception. That’s why we were thrilled – thrilled! – to see these photos of the LK850 from LG. Except for a couple hardware rockers at the bottom, the phone is apparently controlled via the touchscreen front.

This means that the interface can switch dynamically depending on what the user is doing with the phone, and we’d guess virtual QWERTY for txting, but as we have nothing but a photo and model number to go on, that’s all rampant conjecture.

  • I’m surprised as well there aren’t more. Given the demand for quality mobile content while respecting the small size requirements consumers want, this is definitely a step in the right direction…

  • The only problem with touch screens is that you lose the tactile response a “regular” phone offers. A lot of people have gotten used to touch-typing with their phones (whether it be their Crackberry, their Treo, or their LG) and to switch to a touch screen is often difficult for people. I use a PPC-6700 and even I somewhat miss the tactile nature of my old phone.

Overall though, I definitely support a move to touch screen. If we can find some way to provide a way to type without looking using a touch screen, all the better.

  • @Kurt: that’s a fine point. I use the buttons on my Treo for typing, even though I could use the touchscreen. I seem to remember a couple years ago some Japanese group came up with a touchscreen that had dynamic raised areas, it could be used for Braille or tactile response. Wonder what happened to them? I’ll check my vaporware drawer when I get home.

  • Yeah, people that text a lot (like 1,000+/month) are probably so used to feeling the buttons click underneath their fingers that a touch screen would really screw them up.

I have a Dell Axim PocketPC with a stylus and all that handwriting recognition crap and I can text on my LG about 5 times faster than I can write on my Axim.

  • The thing is, screen realestate and overall size, this is a great compromise. I’m just afraid as Kurt said, fast typing ( I can do 30+ words per minute on my treo) will create some huge mistakes on a touchscreen qwerty.

  • May I inform you: here in Paris (France) we got a full touchscreen MTV mobile phone (nickname: MTV 3.0) with online contents and I think build in too. I don’t about the manufacturer behind the device but the phone is on the market since few month. If you interested I’ll translate the specs but I’m too lazy now (sorry ;-), just let me know.

  • Oh I forget the link: http://www.mtvenmodemobile.com/ (means MTV in mobile mode)

  • One thing bad about “all touch screen” interface is the repair. God knows what it takes to repair this stuff…may be replacing the phone!!

  • NOKIA 7710http://www.nokia.com/7710
is so far the best Smartphone with the highest resolution Touchscreen ever –
I have it for 3 years now and i don’t see any way to give it up to any other present solution, cos any and each of these are kids toys in comparison to this mammoth
    - and i am not talkin bout the size but tons of features ;).

  • Touchscreen dialing is fine… until you need to call someone while driving down the road! The calendaring features and Outlook sync features of my Pocket PC / Phone are very handy! But it is a bit disappointing as a phone.

I had to invest an extra $30 in MS Voice Command software so both my wife and I could dial my phone accurately while driving. (As a passenger she even had trouble hitting the touchscreen numbers while driving down the road even though she wasn’t the driver).

  • One thing is importent about touch screen mobile is don’t worry about buttons bcoz there is problem in regular mobiles to damage buttons due to pressing.
