BluOynx Mobile Content Server

Agere Systems has announced the BluOynx Mobile Content Server, a device that aims to un-tether users from PCs and stationary storage devices. The BluOynx server is a small portable server that is controlled via cell phone.

It is about the size of a credit card and supports USB, Bluetooth and WiFi. The server will come in capacities ranging from 1GB - 40GB.

One of BluOynx’s more interesting features is that it’s controlled not by a built-in screen, but rather by a cell phone. Users log into the server with their cell phones to change the servers settings and such.

Another cool element is that it can be setup to stream and share media to other nearby authorized users. It can be used to backup files. And if its connected to WiFi, it can serve broadband to cell phones that do not have wireless broadband.

The retail price of the BluOnyx server is expected to range from $99 to $250 depending on storage capacity.

This is really neat… would even consider buying it if it fit my requirements… but sadly, like all things good in life, their server is down (or overloaded by the masses) ;-)

> Server not found
> Firefox can’t find the server at http://www.bluoynx.com.

…maybe next time.

I can’t think of how I would personally use it, but it does look pretty. The slick black minimalist would make my apartment look cooler. But what do I know about being cool.

I am not too keen on the idea of controlling things via cell phone. Its too time consuming and hard to navigate. However, Opera mini has done wonders for my cell phone browsing abilities. (mini.opera.com)

It *looks* great, but I’m not sure just how practical it would be - the part where it’s controlled via cellphones brings up a huge red flag - with which cellphones will it be compatible with? Will I have to sell my soul to get a phone that it will work with? Or will it hookup with any phone on the market? That’s a very important question for me, because I wouldn’t want to have to go out of my way to get a specific phone/brand just to use as a remote, basically.

Other than that, the features sound interesting. Shame the site isn’t up so I can gleen more details.

The URL has a typo. The correct URL is: http://www.bluonyx.com

OMG…I am so getting this. Seems like all who have commented so far do not see practical use for this. I’ll be you the scenario I’m facing right now…In fact I have been googling around recently if something like this exists…lo and behold, thanks CrunchGear!

SCENARIO: I move often and I carry my laptop around with me. I also work with Oracle software, Database, Apps modules. Currently, I have these softwares on my Laptop…but it is very tasking and demanding. Starting/Stopping the oracle services alone can take up to 15 - 20 mins. This really drains my machine. Now with the BluOnyx, I will be able to carry my mobile server along with me and will have all the tasking applications on it. Therefore, I do not need to waste system resources when I’m not working on Oracle, since everything will be located on the BluOnyx!

Very nice device!

“…controlled not by a built-in screen…”
Because then it would just be another media player thrown into the mix.

This sounds like a Zune without the screen that likes cellphones. I must be missing something because I see this as an oversized sd card…

That’s exactly what it is — an oversized SD card. However, the beauty of it is that it’s compatible with any computer out there. Right now, SD cards are not factory standard on laptops (or desktops). I have a MacBook Pro and I’d have to get a card reader in order to use an SD card on my computer.

This is perfect for itunes storage so I can free up space for the multiple OSes I’m running. This also makes my iTunes library completely portable between those OSes. And the price is perfect!

I’ve been looking for something like this for some time now.
