Amit and Jon both make valid points.

In my case (pun intended), I'd like my kids' iPods to have that extra lil' protection a case provides, and ifrogz seems to make a quality product that the kids will have fun customizing.

And oh what a wonderful world it would be if we could pay a little extra for something that lasted longer. But you know there are production meetings taking place at this exact moment where they're saying, "Welllll, let's not make it *too* robust...wink wink nudge nudge."

I am hard headed Amit - where you see a need for a case, I see a fundamental design flaw that hasn't been addressed or worse, kept to exist for additional profits. Apple DOES make royalties from ALL ipod related products. I am sure the manufacturer could "beef up" the cases quite easily for half the price you are buying your additional case and probably half the weight as the internal mechanisms would mesh better with the outside case.

This issue isn't only isolated to ipods (Apple) by the way... but many consumer electronics who prefer to use cheap components for whatever reason. Personally, I would prefer to pay an extra 10$ for something that lasts 2x longer as it pays for itself in the long run. Remember, the profit motive is in making sure something breaks easily so you need to buy a new one every year or so instead of quality.

Cases are important. The manufacturer is trying to be competitive and reduce weight, size because thats what most people want. However most people also want to be able to use their MP3 player through most conditions. Depending on the level of rough usage, the customer now has the ability to purchase cases with different levels of protections. Its just another element of customization.
For example, my mom uses her ipod in her car and only in her car and doesn't need a case while I abuse my ipod to the max and I should have a case (it might be too late for that though).

Jacki,

I have a few iFrogz cases. Best silicone case ever. And @ Jon, there are things called accidents. I throw my iPod in my backpack sometimes and I'm thankful for a good case!

I don't buy plastic shells for my eggs so why would I buy one for my ipod? If you are that rough with your ipod that it needs additional protection - maybe it's time to review your lifestyle and get a stereo instead.

I think this whole "I need another case for my case" speaks louder towards manufacturers flawed designs and built-in obsoleteness then to individual competence. They know their product is fragile so instead of fixing it, they make royalties off products that shouldn't exist in the first place.

I love all the customization options that this iFrogz provides (I could do with out all the extra Zs though) - I didnt' see any mention of the new clear cases on their site though.
