It’s funny, the problem of product built-in obsoleteness is so pervasive now that we have web sites dedicated towards determining their bitter end. Sad… so very sad.

Argh!!! I HATE waiting! Now I’m going to be compulsively checking that link every hour. Thanks a lot, CrunchGear.

Maybe we should have a website counting down to the death of the “iPod Death Clock”. Wait too late.

My 2nd gen 10gig died last week - thx for reminding me of this tragic event :P. (new shuffle coming to make me feel better).

My 4G 20g non-photo died in two months; my replacement died after a year and seven months. I bought my new 30g from Costco; they said “100% satisfaction guaranteed; we’ll take it back, just keep your receipt.”

Bret… don’t you know that “100% satisfaction guaranteed” is only valid UNTIL the product breaks, after which point, your screwed and need to buy the latest and greatest. These manufacturing companies are way ahead of you… the distributors are just that… distributors. They have no power and if they do honor their word, it comes out of their pocket, not the manufacturers (most of the time).

I sure miss my 95% steel VCR right now, that SOB weighed 30 lbs and I cursed it when ever I had to move it around when I was in elementary school but you know what… it outlasted every other piece of electronics until VHS become obsolete. Maybe that’s why that manufacturer went out of business.

@Jon

Costco has the greatest return policy ever (well, had, they updated their return policy on computers recently) but they will take your broken ipod 3.7 yrs down the road if thats what happens, and you have the receipt.

*people abuse this quite often, such as getting a AC for the summer and returning in the winter, etc.

Bought my 1st gen 20gb photo i-pod last summer - looks like it has just croaked on me. No warning, nothing. Dead as a dormouse.
Anyway I think this is a blessing in disguise - new gen of oono players are so cool and easier to use.

I think all ipods come fully equiped with a self destruction device that automaticlly fries it’s internal components after a year or so. Apple’s sales went up 40% this year, I think its because everyone is stupid enouph to go back and keep buying these things. I have and iPod photo 60gb. I have had it replaced 4 times in 1 year through apple care! You don’t buy iPods, you only rent them. The product is flawed and apple’s service SUCKS!
