JLr7: For People l33t3r Than You

Hey I love intriguing and original design, but on the other hand, I’m nothing if not practical. And as a tech critic, it’s my job to question the validity of products.

So when I saw this JLr7 watch I knew that it falls neatly into the realm of products I’d question heavily. Designed by Eri & Eiichi, the JLr7 features a bunch of L-shaped segments that somehow tell time.

Now, there is a way to read this thing, but honestly, wtf cares? It seems like such a needless and time-consuming endeavor just to have something that looks different. I guess maybe I could see someone wearing it if they had absolutely no intention of using it for time (someone like Raj who likes crap like this), but even still, I think it’d piss me off too much to derive any style from it.

At any rate, the JLr7 can be yours for for about $83. You know, if you’re into that sort of thing.

I’ve been staring at the picture for a while now and I still can’t figure out how telling time works. The stupid time would change before I can figure out how to read it. I guess its modern art or something. Would definetly be interesting if someone asked you “what time is it” and you showed them your watch.

Urban Outfitters has these, I think they look kind of cool but as far as watches go there are some much better ones out there. It looks cool but my guess is it’s a little to techy to be stylish, and to me stylish was the look they were going for. I saw a way cooler watch (fossil I think) where the time was in minutes till hour format and hand written (digitized) so at 11:54 it would read Six Till Noon. I’ll try and find it online and post a link, it was really hot.

You seem smart when you wear it but stupid when somebody asks you the time. Why not just get a cool dragon tattoo on your wrist… has the same features and price point with the added bonus of not being able to loosing it, unless you are caught steeling ;-)

HEY….let’s not knock a little creativity. This goes out on the edge; looking for a small audience, not for everybody. I like the quirky design to keep people guessing what it actually is. After a little bit it would be intuitive to tell the time; just like learning your multiplication tables (yes, I’m pre-calculator).

If only I didn’t have to wear it as a watch I’d buy one (pocket type or Treo screen versions??)

The other day I was speaking to a friend of mine in the fashion industry and she told me that with the advent of cell phones we’re going to see a lot more watches similar to this. Watches are the main vestige of accessorizing for men and since nearly everyone uses their cell phone to tell time now, men’s watches are going to move more towards the department of interesting fashion rather than function and utility.

But you’re right… wtf cares about this watch. :)

Amit, and anyone else wondering, there is a image at the bottom of the product page explaining how to read the time.

How about another version? This Talus watch - http://www.talusfurniture.com/amusements/watch/index.html is along the same lines.

have to admit that I found it on a competitive site - http://www.boingboing.net/2006/01/27/watch_displays_cheek.html

Still a winner or am I as lucky as a Wii??

These types of watches aren’t really that tough to get used to. The first few days they can be confusing, but what you get the hang out of it, you can tell time just like it was an analog watch. I have one from Tokyo Flash that lights up LEDS on the left and right for hour/minutes and I can tell time just as fast as I could with any other analog watch.

Just because they look confusing at first doesn’t mean it’s always going to be confusing. Plus, they look cool.

These watches make dyslexics of us all! I wonder if they are programmed it to have specific patterns so that eventually, you actually can decipher the and figure out what the time really is.

I can barely handle those analogs without hash marks for the hours - this is ridiculous. At least its not gaudy.. oh wait..

That’s sort of like my new invention the Binary Code Watch.

Damn, that’s the first geeky watch that doesn’t look like it’ll double your wrist size
When will people learn that just because it’s geeky, it doesn’t have to look it?

Wearing a watch like this is a matter of taste not geekiness, in the same manner that every other fashion item is like clothes, shoes and mobile phones. A lot of people thought people wearing iPods were geek-looking when those first came out and now you are considered a fashion victim if you don’t have one. There is nothing certain when you are talking about fashion,

I think it is good to have alternative stuff out there, it is great to have variety in appearance and let’s be honest, there is not much you can change on a wrist watch unless you go for something radical. Tokyoflash has a lot of crap but I think this is elegant (and the Blue version is quite cool) and as practical as any non-standard watch can be. It doesn’t take more than 2 secods to tell the time when you read the instructions - about the same time it takes to take the mobile out of your pocket and do the same thing.

In any case, it is obvious that this is intended for things like going out at night (LEDs in general look crap in daylight after all) and should not be compared with everyday time pieces. It is a fashion accessory. And when you are out you definitely don’t care if it takes you more than 0.1 second to tell the time.
