Wiimote Mod: Electronic Drums

We’ve yet to see anything representing the drum kit demo shown at E3 this year hit the Nintendo Wii yet, but if you’re yearning to play drums using the Wiimote, check out this new mod. Bob Somers has put together a PC app that lets you play an electronic drum kit using the Wiimote (though, he kind of sucks at it.) An interesting thing I noticed while watching the video is that there are also keys on the keyboard mapped to the electronic drums (the same way a MIDI controller is in Reason.)
This makes me question whether or not you could record Wiimote hits into some kind of recording software. It would be much easier (and intuitive) to use the Wiimote to record real time drum samples. The only thing that’s missing is the Nunchuck, which would make playing the drums a bit easier, and much more realistic.

This should help spur more Wii sales, as people will realize how good they have it with consoles vs PCs for placing “active” games… I doubt people are willing to give up their Wii in favor of a PC anytime soon. It will certainly be interesting to see how things merge together between phones/consoles/pcs/mp3s in the next few years.

The merger is already happening in many areas, i see the most potential in the cell phone arena with a lot of phones out/coming soon that are capable of playing all kinds of media, surfing the web, synching with outlook, email capabilities, playing games, watching streaming TV (verizon very soon)…and oh yeah, making phone calls.
But this is about WII…a great paradigm shift in innovation from nintendo, makes me proud of the people who brought supermario long ago. Now who will sue them for breaking thier fondu dish while trying to drum?

Speaking of Wii modes. Someone has modded the Wiimote to work with their computer and control counterstrike. This could be revolutionary in terms of first person shooters in the future. Check it out.

(I don’t know if that video works properly because I can’t access it from my school network. Our computers here suck.)
If not then http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=counterstrike+wiimote
