Cingular Goes For The Jawbone

Cingular customers looking for a decent Bluetooth headset can now rejoice. Cingular announced today that it’ll be carrying Aliph’s Jawbone Bluetooth headset. It comes in a jet black, modern design and packs military-spec noise cancellation. Basically, they jacked some secrets from the US military to offer noise cancellation that adapts to your surroundings.

So if you’re in a quiet office building and walk into a crowded street, the volume should adjust accordingly. It also comes with four different earloops so that everyone can wear it properly. It’s available now for $120 — a bit more expensive than most Bluetooth headsets.

For 120$, I would certainly purchase this… if it was light enough to wear for an extended period of time without having to go through ear cramps. Military technology marketed to civilians is usually a no brainer when it comes to early adoption. Now… if only they could stick a verbal tomogatchi to cry in your ear every 10 minutes because you didn’t press #183#431 to give it some food!

After looking at that image and having no idea how it would comfortably fit on someone’s head (looking like a brick-lighter from the side is all), my mind automatically invisioned a scanner - yes, the ones from Dragonball Z. :D

And you know what comes next: “VEGETA! WHAT DOES THE SCANNER SAY ABOUT HIS POWER LEVEL?”

“IT’S OVER NINE THOUSAAAAAAAAAAAAAAND!”

In this case, it’s over $119, but close enough.

I called 5 Cingular stores, went to 2, and finally picked on up. I’ve only made a few test calls, but so far, it’s as good as http://www.theboom.com

It’s a bit heavier than most, but not much. It has 4 loops around the ear, and 4 different ear inserts, I was able to find one size that fits pretty good.

It comes with a wall charger that has a usb cable, so you can charge it in the wall, or off your computer via bluetooth. The box it comes in is pretty sweet, great presentation.

So, I have used dozens of bluetooth headsets, my latest one with the best soundquality is the Nokia bh-900. yes, I’ve tried the 510, and yes the bh-900 is better at noise cancellation, but it doesn’t sit in your ear like the 510 so inbound sound is a bit quiet.

Well, this is best of both worlds. It sits in your ear and is LOUD. The noise cancellation is pretty awesome. 4 windows in my suburban down and radio blasting, and my friend said my voice was loud and clear and he could barely hear muffly on and off the radio in the background, but my voice never got covered up.

At home, I then turned on the radio at a pretty good volume, and sat 6 inches from it and my friend said he barely heard the music in the back, but again my voice came in very clear.

Their is a bit of inbound static, not alot, it’s just not crystal clear like the bh-900.

Overall, I’m soooo excited, can’t wait to do more test calls this weekend.

Go get it if you can, 30 days to return if you don’t like it, we’ll see…. But i’m a kid at xmas for sure.

But oh, the red wasn’t available only the gray. I kind of wanted the red. I’m hoping I can swap it for the red when it’s out..

Hey Peter, some questions:

Is it possible to swap this earpiece and use it on a non-Cingular phone? I’m curious because I’ve been looking to get a sweet looking earpiece, and this seems to do the trick. Maybe I can find it for a little less. Also how does it connect to phone, bluetooth probably?

Anyways, nice review!

Jon,

It is a bluetooth headset, so you can definitely use it on a non-Cingular phone. I’m actually going to go pick it up later on today.

A friend of mine sent me this link earlier today and it also looks pretty promising. Check it out:

It is a normal bluetooth headset, Cingular just has the exclusive selling it for now. However on their website starting Jan 15th, looks like they will be selling it direct. The red and black, of which I think I want the black.

It does come with 4 ear hooks, 2 right, 2 left, and 4 different ear pieces for different ears. I’m using the smallest one right now, and it doesn’t fit perfect. I’ll be swapping out with the others and hopefully get a nice comfortable fit.

So far, pretty damn cool. I’m still on the fence on it for a few reasons as I think it’s a bit fragile with the metal earhook, and the fact that the ear pieces you can swap out seem to fall off a bit too easily.

Lastly it might be my glasses but I can’t seem to always keep the headset to touch my cheek, which is necessary for the noise cancellation to work.
