that’s set to change in ‘07). That being said, we’re here to help you, so if we say, “yes, you’re probably covered by the data network,” to help you with your decision to go 3G, then that’s because it’s what we’re supposed to do.

  • How do the new 3G networks compare to the older EVDO networks?

  • That was Jon Lee by the way, I forgot to change my name…

  • That is great news… but if your only using a cell phone to … ummm… talk… how will this make things better? Fewer dropped calls? Wireless internet is still a little too steep for me.

    Jon

  • I think 3G is more focused towards the mobile internet community, mainly those with the fancier mobile web phones, like the BlackJack which was given away more recently. Phone companies have been ramping up their wireless capabilities. You see Verizon and Sprint competing over their media phones and their media networks, but I see Cingular has hit what may be the most profitable market of all.

  • Cingular may have a data network but each person will also be carrying another Carrier’ phone in order to have a decent voice conversation. Why not get one network working well before throwing up another?

  • I don’t exactly consider Boise the sticks (#88 on the metro list), but we get no 3G love.

Many of those named cities are just the smaller cities within major metro areas. Instead of Phoenix, they claim Chandler, Gilbert, Glendale, Mesa, Peoria, Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe.

  • They need more 3G phones, period. The blackjack n HTC models just aint doin it for me. Hopefully Nokia hops on that train soon so I can continue to enjoy symbian goodness.

  • BPM, just wait for the first and second quarter releases. I think the manufacturers will be tentative to drop a lot of new techy type phones on what is currently a monopolized market. If T-Mobile can get into the mix and make this a slightly more competitive market, I’d expect a lot of new 3G or similar phones being released soon.

  • Denver isn;t exactly the sticks either. No 3G in Denver? WTF?

  • I guess I qualify as “in the sticks”…

“We are expanding our coverage every day but unfortunately this is one of the few areas we haven’t reached yet. Please check back soon. If you think you may have entered the wrong ZIP, please re-enter and try again.”

I’ve yet to ask the local shop what they think about it, but according to cingy, they don’t even exist, lol. So when can I expect it?…

  • I have a European Nokia E61 that uses WCDMA at the 2100 MHz band, know of any providers that will support 3G at that frequency?

  • I don’t really think of myself as living in the sticks, but sadly I’m about 60 miles south and 30 miles north of any 3G loving…and EDGE sucks so bad.

  • Add Milwaukee to the list of cities that must be “In the sticks”.

  • Thing is, T-Mo’s network is smaller and is only GSM1900, whereas Cingular also has GSM850.

  • My problem with every other data plan aside from Sprint’s is the price. Sprint charges you $15/mo for unlimited data… every other provider charges at least double that. Granted, Cingular is a GSM provider, so they have a wider selection of phones. But paying more than $15/mo for unlimited data seems to me like highway robbery.

  • 3G is definitely spotty at best for Cingular. 75% of the time I look at the Blackjack it says E for Edge. This is the bay area, and I’m in Orange County and San Diego for the holidays. Everytime I get excited that I might be on 3G, and jump into the browser, it drops down to EDGE. When I do get 3G, it is fast…

I’m hoping to tether this weekend and see how fast it is on my notebook.
