I don’t know if I’d toss down the $30 for it. It would be nice, however, to be able to easily resharpen the blade on my leatherman. I’d probably just end up hurting myself then, however, expecting the blade was dull when it was really sharp……….
Don’t be too intimidated. I recieved something like this as a gift a few years ago. It takes a few steps to sharpen a knife, it’s sharp but nothing to write home about. It’s more novelty than useful unless you need to make an appearance of sharpening knives continuously to keep a certain cook in your house happy….
Well, if that certain cook was my wife, then $30 is more then worth it…. :) However, she isn’t that diehard of a cook and probably wouldn’t really care all that much……
I did get her one “sharp” present this year that won me lots of points – a scrapbooking geeky toy called a cricut machine. Imagine merging a plotter and an exacto knife. Sort of like a die-cut press on steroids. You get these expensive little pattern cartridges for it and then can cut about anything out of paper. Actually pretty neat…… :)
Hand-sharpening knives isn’t that hard, and if you have any decent knife/steel you are going to want to go at it by hand and not let a pre-angled machine do that work for you. This should be fine for that 36-piece set you got from Target, though.
Not a bad deal for the price. It would be perfect for sharpening those knife sets from Target like bpm said above. But if you wish to obtain a very sharp blade, some stone sets to do it your self, or having it done professionally would be the better investment. I’m still looking for a good solution for my serrated edge Spyderco knife. That thing has been torn to hell from years of fishing and scouting and I just can’t do it any justice by hand.
I think a new knife is in order…… ;)
