You need a solar-powered GPS receiver. It’s just what it sounds like: a GPS receiver powered by the sun. It has built-in Bluetooth to communicate with your PDA and even features a low-power mode, so it only takes the satellites’ pings when needed, saving you precious battery time.

Hi Ryan, if that family had a GPS it still wouldn’t have saved their lives, you cannot eat it, signal or do anything “survival related” with it – being in the middle of nowhere AND knowing where you are still isn’t better then being in the middle of nowhere and not knowing where you are. They just had a string of “bad lucks” that accumulated. Maybe they wouldn’t have taken a wrong turn but from what I read, they where not prepared for what happened to begin with… would they have taken the time to plan their route via GPS as well? We will never know, regardless fate has a destiny for all of us but only reveals itself after your screwed ;-) Learn from their mistakes to make sure it doesn’t happen to you, learn about survival and actually run off for a weekend to try it on your own – the world is still a very tough place outside of the cities and when your alone in the woods.

I would prefer a signal mirror, map and a compass to this, technology should only be used as a supplement, not replacement essential survival equipment – which I fear is how most people use them for.

As for how accurate this GPS unit is, I don’t see how it would be any less accurate than your Garmin, all GPS comapnies use the same USAF Navstar satellites. The only difference between this and your Garmin is that with Garmin, you get access to a server system that can give you up to date directions to every which and where with your very own GPS unit, while this requires your PDA or Laptop to give you server access.

Pretty sweet product, given the circumstances where GPS is most useful and most likely to give out on you.

I wonder how accurate this would be compared to your run of the mill Garmin.
