As an owner of the Bose SoundDock, and a past owner of an ipod (rendering the SoundDock useless) I can attest to the obvious benefit of having a display on the remote. Additionally, the ability to navigate from the remote is key. $549 is a bit pricey for my taste but I'm not sure that's I wouldn't have bought it a year ago. Does it function as an alarm clock? Maybe that's worth $40-50 and I'm sick of using my mobile. Fantastic.
