Nokia E65 Surfaces: High-End Features, Mid-Range Price

From somewhere in Hungary comes word of this upcoming Nokia handset, the E65. Our Hungarian is rusty, but what we can divine is that it’s a Symbian S60-powered sliding smartphone sans QWERTY that is just packed with features we want: 2-megapixel camera with auto focus, a 352×416 TFT screen with 16 million colors (that’s more than your phone, smartie), 3G UMTS/HSDPA compatibility (GSM for voice, natch), as well as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and a microSD slot for additional storage.

While it seems like those are all high-end features, this is actually a mid-range phone, by Q2 2007 standards; it should go for about $445 unsubsidized, meaning that if Cingular or T-Mobile pick it up Stateside, you should be able to get your hands on it for about $200 with contract. That’s a great price considering the full feature set. Let’s hope we see it here, yes?

I need a new phone. Although mine is working great and it is only 2 yrs old, the new features are tempting. The thing that I like about my phone is that it has a flash which can also be used as a torchlight.

Sascha (Who am I?)

I’m a true Nokianian. I’ve had Nokia phones all my (cell phone carrying) life and have religiously followed every single new handset they would dream up. At some point the model numbers came flying out faster than a Bugatti Veyron, while the increase in actual features and usability was rather meager. When I got my free Nokia phone with my T-Mobile contract I promised myself I would upgrade within a couple of months, but now - 2.5 years later and still with the same pretty badly scratched phone - I catch myself desiring the HTC P3300 more than any Nokia N9x model. Why? Simple: I lost my faith in Symbian.

Having programmed applications for Windows Mobile myself I have to admit I LIKE it, and I guess I grew up faster than Nokia did. They are still catering to the young croud of folks who will use the phone 24/7 to listen to radio/music/their friends’ endless chatter, take pictures and videos and send text messages, voice messages, photo messages, multi-hyper-giga-media messages. But somehow that’s not necessarily what I’m looking for in a phone anymore. So I find myself dreaming of the Titanium Black version of the Nokia 8800, a slim and stylish phone, but completely overprized, and T-Mobile stopped offering it.

So what’s next for me? Is this the end of the road for this admitted Nokia lover? Sure, the E65 looks promising and has none of the swivel-camera free-hands action crap, but somehow I still wish it came with Windows Mobile on it…
