Sneaky Apple. I remember back in the day they made me pay for an upgrade to iChat AV (as opposed to the regular iChat at the time) when iSight came out. Now if you have an Intel Mac and you want to use it with Apple’s new 802.11n-capable Airport Extreme Base Station, you’ll need to shell out $4.99 for a software patch allowing you to use it. Seems Apple has been secretly shipping 802.11n inside Intel-based Macs for awhile now.

Oh well. If you want the speed and it’s worth it to you, just get it over with quickly so pain and sadness are reduced to an absolute minimum.

  • If you guys want Press passes to these events, you really should do some journalism.

Apple is required to charge for the upgrade to the hardware because adding new features to an existing product opens them up to accusations of fradulent accounting under Sarbanes Oxley. (EG: they counted the revenue when the machine was sold, but if they add this feature, then SOX insists that the machine wasn’t delivered until the last feature was delivered.)

Seriously, not knowing that isn’t a big deal, but I’m sick of seeing entries from people bashing Apple based on their ignorant assumptions of their motivations.

  • Wireless N … for $5 seems like an awesome deal to me. I know some hacker will find a workaround, but I will just pay the $5 and take my better internet connection. A pcmcia card is at least $80 at Best Buy.

  • The 802.11n capability isn’t going to make your internet connection “better”, only LAN file transfers & streaming video/content to your apple tv (if you get one). Honestly, unless you’re going to be throwing HD video around, or doing a lot of file transfers, you don’t need 802.11n. I see why people are bitching, but they need to decide whether or not they need n – and if they don’t, then they should quit whining about $5.
